Dear Colleague:
As I mark my first 10 years as president of Saint Louis University, my thoughts and prayers turn toward you, our faculty and staff, who contribute to the University's mission of education and health care. The past decade has been filled with extraordinary changes and remarkable achievements. But I won't enumerate all those accomplishments in this column. The question that inspires me is deceptively simple - how did we all do it? How did we achieve such success? We did it because of you. We did it because of the foundation laid by my predecessors and those faculty and staff who came before all of us.
Although I often receive awards and acclamations, the credit for the incredible renaissance of Saint Louis University belongs to the thousands of women and men & faculty and trustees, regents and students, benefactors and staff, administrators and alumni & who commit their hearts, time, talents and financial resources to the University. It has been an incredible 10 years. Today Saint Louis University is academically excellent, distinctive in its mission, purposeful in its use of resources and, more critically, positioned for greatness. But now is NOT the time to look back, for there is still much to be accomplished. After a decade, the future is on my mind, now more than ever. My goal is to make Saint Louis University the finest Catholic university in the United States. It's a goal that I believe we come closer and closer to realizing each year. Together, with shared initiative, trust and vision, Saint Louis University will continue its evolution into the best, most vibrant institution of learning and patient care in the country. Together, we learn and grow. Together, we move forward. As we prepare for the 1997-98 academic year, I hope that each member of the University community will think about what she or he can do to help make SLU be more innovative, creative, courageous and effective in providing a solid, value-centered experience for our students. It might be a small thing, such as going out of your way to help a new student feel comfortable, or something a bit bigger, such as identifying a way the University can save money and be more efficient. And please, remember that everything we do at Saint Louis University has one central focus: the education of our students and the care of our patients. I wish each of you a productive and satisfying academic year. God bless you.
