Members of the media frequently call the University for experts on various topics. If your expertise can be used for a breaking news story or other story that would be of interest to the general public, call your campus public relations office.
Kenneth R. Smith, M.D. (surgery) was interviewed April 20 by the Chicago Tribune about "trepanation," a procedure in which a hole is drilled in the front of the head, supposedly to change blood flow and redistribute fluid in the brain. Smith discussed the history of the procedure and the reputed medical benefits.
Dr. Tim Lomperis (political science) was interviewed by Knight-Ridder News Service. Lomperis discussed the Navy's F/A-18 Hornet. Lomperis also was interviewed by The Florida Times-Union for an article about the U-2 high altitude spy plane.
Dr. Xiao Ming Xu (anatomy and neurobiology) was interviewed April 22 by USA Today. Xu discussed his research on spinal cord regeneration.
Mike Tado (SLUCare physical therapist) was interviewed April 15 for the June issue of Prime Health & Fitness Magazine. He talked about the best way to overcome the minor aches and pains associated with working out.
Kevin O'Rourke, OP (Center for Health Care Ethics) was interviewed April 15 by the Medical Tribune on end-of-life decisions and how they affect patients and their loved ones.
Keith S. Naunheim, M.D. (surgery) was interviewed April 8 by 20/20. He will be featured in a story about SLUCare patient Jim Russell, who received a thoracoscopic sympathectomy for hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating of the hands and/or feet). Russell was followed pre-operatively, through the surgery and during recovery. Naunheim was interviewed about the surgery and how it will provide relief for Russell.
Dr. Paul Shore (educational studies and American studies) wrote an op-ed piece, "Next Great Debate: Care of Older Kids," for the April 20 Christian Science Monitor. The article discussed school-aged child care.
