Homeless Center

The School of Nursing has received a one-year, $61,500 grant from Group Health Foundation that will provide nurse practitioners to help in the health care activities at Saint Patrick Partnership Center, 800 Tucker Blvd.

These services will be provided and coordinated with Grace Hill Neighborhood Health Centers. More than 7,000 homeless men, women and children are cared for yearly through the services at the center. Screenings for health problems that are rampant among the homeless have not been possible until now.

"The nurse practitioners will be available on-site at Saint Patrick's Partnership Center to help meet the health needs of the homeless," said Dr. Joan H. Carter, associate dean of the School of Nursing. "The goal of the project is to provide health care and offer health promotion to the homeless."

The School of Nursing also is looking for physicians, dentists and other health professionals to volunteer time and services to help the homeless. All health care volunteers will have malpractice coverage under the Missouri Department of Health's Volunteer Health Care Workers in a Health Department Act. In addition, the School of Nursing and Saint Patrick's Partnership Center need donations of supplies or money for the purchase of supplies.
