Lay Field Station Offers Classes on Writing

Saint Louis University, in conjunction with its new Lay Field Station, is offering a writing workshop this summer. The Nature Writer's Workshop, held from July 12 to 18 at the Lay Field Station, will introduce prospective writers to the process of writing columns, essays and books on natural history. Dr. Peter Bernhardt, a past Pulitzer Prize nominee and professor of biology, will teach the course. Several field trips and guest speakers are planned.

The Lay Field Station is on 300 acres of rolling hills with woodland and field habitats in Pike County, between Bowling Green and Louisiana, Mo. A five-acre lake, several small ponds and a small stream are on the property.

The workshop will be taught in new classrooms and laboratories with computers, microscopes and a variety of field equipment used in ecological studies. A registration fee of $465 includes six nights lodging, all meals, field trips, a writing package, textbooks, a field journal and hand lens. Other field equipment also will be available to participants. One hour of college credit is a available for an additional $277.
