Saint Louis University is second only to the University of Notre Dame in the number of doctoral degrees granted by Catholic universities. Saint Louis University granted 120 doctoral degrees in 1996, ranking second on the National Research Council's recently released Summary Report 1996: Doctorate Recipients from United States Universities. The University of Notre Dame secured the top spot, with 130 doctorates granted. In recent years, the report's top institutions have been Saint Louis University, Boston College, Catholic University, Fordham University and the University of Notre Dame, in varying order.
