Faculty Honored for Excellence in Service
|
The Saint Louis University Faculty Senate's Burlington Northern Faculty Achievement Award Committee has announced the winners of the 1998 Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award. The criteria for this year's selections centered on service to the community.
Cordie Given Reese, associate professor of community health nursing, was the first-place winner. Judith L. Myers, assistant professor of nursing, and Benjamin L. Abell, professor of meteorology, were recognized with second-place awards.
Reese's service includes a long-standing commitment to the Forest Park Southeast-McCree Town neighborhood in the city of St. Louis. Her efforts led to the establishment of a community health center and a weekend meals program for seniors.
Abell prepares media weather forecasts and contributes to radio stations KMOX, KWMU and Radio Information Services, a service used by the visually impaired. He is a member of the board of directors for the Emergency Preparedness Council of St. Louis County and the Box Club 8 of St. Louis, a fire department support group.
Myers was honored for her work in parish nursing, an evolving area of the nursing practice directed toward promoting the health of a faith community. She is a volunteer parish nurse at Lafayette Park United Methodist Church.
"The committee was much impressed by the quality and degree of involvement in community service that was evident in all the nominations that were submitted for consideration in this year's selection of the awardees," said William Stauder, SJ, associate academic vice president. "The outreach of many of our faculty into the community, both professionally and socially, truly is exceptional."
Selection committee members evaluated award nominees based on service involvement, relevance to the University mission, quality of accomplishment, leadership exercised and integration into teaching.
