Alumni to be Honored at Reunion Weekend

Bruemmer and 11 Others Win Merit Awards


Mary A. Bruemmer, a longtime staff member and volunteer at Saint Louis University, is one of 12 distinguished alumni selected to receive Alumni Merit Awards. They will be awarded at the University's reunion weekend Sept. 26-28.

"The awards recognize outstanding service and contributions of University graduates and are presented annually by most schools and colleges of the University during reunion weekend," said Dave Wells, director of alumni programs. "Each of the recipients exemplify the University's Jesuit mission through their actions and their community service efforts."

Several University-wide activities are planned for the weekend, including a faculty happy hour at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, in the O'Brien House; the Parks College building dedication at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27; a Gala Alumni Dinner at 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, in the St. Louis Room of Busch Memorial Center; and a Mass at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28, in St. Francis Xavier College Church.

The winners of this year's awards are:

  • Mary A. Bruemmer (A&S '42, Grad '60) will receive the William Barnaby Faherty, SJ, Alumni Merit Award from the College of Arts and Sciences. Bruemmer was an employee of Saint Louis University for nearly 35 years, serving in roles such as the dean of women and dean of student affairs. She continues to serve the University as a full-time volunteer.

  • Carolyn S. Corbett (Nurs '79, Grad Nurs '86) will receive the School of Nursing Alumni Merit Award. She is the senior vice president of the Guthrie Healthcare System in Sayre, Pa. Corbett also is an adjunct assistant professor of nursing at Syracuse University.

  • Bernadette Gray-Little (Grad '68, '70) will receive the William V. Stauder, SJ, Alumni Merit Award from the Graduate School. She is a professor and chair of the department of psychology at the University of North Carolina and is a fellow of the American Psychological Association.

  • Rudolph C. Hasl (Law '67) and Michael M. Mihm (Law '67) are co-recipients of the Vincent C. Immel Alumni Merit Award from the School of Law. Hasl is dean of St. John's University School of Law and is former dean of the Saint Louis University School of Law. Mihm is completing his 15th year as federal district judge for the Central District of Illinois, where he is chief judge. He is one of only seven federal judges to serve on the executive committee of the Judicial Conference.

  • G. David Hollenbach, SJ (Grad '68) will receive the George Klubertanz, SJ, Alumni Merit Award from the College of Philosophy and Letters. He is a professor of Catholic theology at Boston College and is an associate fellow of the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University.

  • Mary Thomas Jirauch, CDP (Nurs '58, Pub Hlth '60) will receive the Public Health Alumni Merit Award. Jirauch is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and has been involved in hospital administration for 35 years.

  • Dr. Elias Michaelis (Med '69) will receive the School of Medicine Alumni Merit Award. He is professor and chairman of the department of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Kansas. Michaelis also is the director of the Higuchi Biosciences Center and the Center for Neurobiology and Immunology Research there.

  • Robert J. Minkler (B&A '59) will receive the Joseph E. Boland, SJ, Alumni Merit Award from the School of Business and Administration. Minkler is managing partner at Anders, Minkler & Diehl LLP. He also is the current chairman of CPA Associates International Inc.

  • JoAnn Pisel (Grad Soc Ser '76) will receive the Social Service Distinguished Alumni Award. Since 1976, Pisel has served as executive director of Call For Help Inc., a not-for-profit community service agency.

  • Dr. Gus G. Sotiropoulos (Dent '50, '52) will receive the Dental School Alumni Merit Award. Sotiropoulos has had a private orthodontics practice in Belleville, Ill., since 1950 and has served on the cleft palate team of Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital since 1956.

  • Frederick Thomas Stark (Parks '55) will receive the Oliver L. Parks Outstanding Alumni Award from Parks College of Engineering and Aviation. Stark is the president and chief engineer of Visionaire Corporation in St. Louis and is a former manager of engineering contract analysis for McDonnell Douglas Corp.
