Graduate student Anita Schnapp (internal medicine) has received a one-year grant in the amount of $12,000 from the Missouri affiliate of the American Heart Association. The research deals with Chagas disease, a major cause of death in South America, and the feasibility of a vaccine using a protein from the parasite that causes the infection.

Michael T. Railey, M.D. (community and family medicine) has received a three-year grant award from the Health Resources and Services Administration in the amount of $134,914 to fund the expansion of the predoctoral training program in family medicine at Saint Louis University.

Val J. Lowe, M.D. (internal medicine) has received a three-year grant award of $136,364 from the Alzheimer's Association to address the treatment of Alzheimer's disease by evaluating how to identify patients who will benefit from treatment using metabolic imaging of the brain called Positron Emission Tomography (PET).

Marty Ferman (aerospace and mechanical engineering) has been granted $11,400 from Boeing to research forebody effects on cavity acoustics using a water tunnel.

From the department of biology: Rob Wood has reached an agreement with the Missouri Department of Conservation regarding population genetic analysis of Etheostoma tetrazonum, the Missouri saddled darter. The funding amount is $2,000. William Picking has been given $3,000 from the U.S. Department of Defense to produce purified IPA proteins and supply them to the U.S. Army. Robert Aldridge has been awarded $1,000 from the Missouri Herpetological Society to support his study, "Frequency of Multiple Paternity in Snakes."

From the department of chemistry: Alexa Serfis has been awarded $25,500 from the Research Corporation to investigate phospholipid monolayers interactions with proteins in the water subphase. Vincent Spaziano has been granted an intergovernmental personnel agreement with the Department of Veterans Administration in the amount of $31,195 for a research project, "Mechanism of Degeneration of Epinephrine Neurons in Alzheimer's Disease."

Lynda Campbell (communication disorders) has been granted second-year funding in the amount of $117,584 from the U.S. Department of Education. The project involves training personnel for the education of individuals with disabilities.

Dr. Roger D. Lewis (community health) has received a one-year grant award in the amount of $149,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to evaluate cleaning methods for removal of lead-contained dust in carpets and upholstery. Findings from this study will be used toward development of cost-effective cleaning techniques for lead abatement and remediation in residential and commercial housing.

From the department of earth and atmospheric sciences: David Kirschner has received $20,000 from the American Chemical Society and $7,036 from the National Science Foundation to study stable isotope geochemistry and procedures commonly used in geochemistry laboratories. Ali Tokay has a $13,500 subcontract with the Universities Space Research Association (USRA). The project is titled, "On the understanding of the microphysical processed in classifying the precipitation type for TRMM."

From the department of psychology: Dr. Eddie Clark has received $82,750 from the National Science Foundation to implement a program that encourages African-American undergraduate students to pursue graduate studies programs in psychology. Dr. David Munz has received $15,084 from Packaging Business Services/Anheuser Busch for students in the applied/experimental psychology practicum. Dr. Richard Wiener has received $6,720 from the National Science Foundation to supplement his grant, "Jury Decision-Making in Capital Cases: The Punishment Phase." The extra funds support "Research Experiences for Undergraduates."

Sandra Johnson (School of Law) has been awarded a second-year grant from the American Society of Law, Medicine & Ethics by the Mayday Fund for $74,400. The project involves legal constraints on access to effective pain relief.

From the School of Social Service: Faye Abram (social service) has received second-year funding in the amount of $34,853 from Washington University/NIDA. William Padberg has been granted a second-year subcontract from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in the amount of $72,963.

Jean Potvin (science and mathematics, Parks) has received a $2,490 contract to conduct Drogue parachute testing.

Virginia Campbell (small business development center) continues a $24,000 subcontract through the Economic Council of St. Louis County. The project is "Texas Engineering Experiment Station."

Celerstine Johnson (Student Education Services Center) has been granted continued funding from the U.S. Department of Education for the Student Support Services program. The goal of the program is to increase the academic performance of eligible disadvantaged students so as to ensure retention and graduation from Saint Louis University.
