Political Science Prof Wins National Award

Dr. Timothy Lomperis, professor and chair of the department of political science, was named winner of the 1996-97 Alpha Sigma Nu National Jesuit Book Award for From People's War to People's Rule: Insurgency and the Lessons of Vietnam.

Lomperis' book, published in 1996 by the University of North Carolina Press, was selected from 26 entries in the social sciences submitted by faculty from Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States.

Books were judged by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities based on content, style, scholarship and readability.

Lomperis spent 11 years writing and researching the book, which was described by Samuel P. Huntington at Harvard University as "social science at its best, combining penetrating theoretical analysis, exhaustive empirical research and relevant implications for policy."

Lomperis is the second consecutive Saint Louis Univer-sity faculty member to win this prestigious national award. Last year Dr. Mark E. Neely Jr., the John E. Bannon, SJ, chair in history and American studies, won the award in the history category.

Alpha Sigma Nu is the national honor society for students enrolled in Jesuit colleges and universities.
