A Message From the President
|
Students will be putting their love into action during the annual November food drive, sponsored by campus ministry. During the week of Nov. 16, hundreds of students, representing more than 30 student organizations, will skip meals, participate in a 24-hour fast, sleep in cardboard boxes in the quad, solicit canned goods in neighborhoods, sponsor dances, sell T-shirts, run races, attend talks and make significant personal and financial contributions. Last year's food drive raised $21,000 for numerous local shelters, soup kitchens and food pantries, and helped the homeless and mentally handicapped, AIDS survivors, and mothers and babies addicted to crack cocaine. Funds also supported programs for runaway children, refugees in Central America and parts of Africa, victims of war and countless others. This year's food drive is being dedicated to the memory of Mother Teresa and her life of compassion to the world's homeless, hungry and forgotten. "Our response as faculty and staff can be an important teaching tool for the students," said Michael Doody, SJ, food drive coordinator and director of campus ministry. "Whatever you can do to raise the consciousness of our students and other colleagues regarding the issues of hunger and homelessness will be a great service." Students will conduct several parking lot collections the week of Nov. 16. Members of the University community also can contribute by sending a check, made payable to "Saint Louis University - Food Drive," to the Loyola Center for Campus Ministry, Busch Memorial Center, Room 207.
