Search Now Under Way for Chief Information Technology Officer

Dr. Richard Breslin, executive vice president and provost, has formed a search committee to hire a chief information technology officer (CITO). This new position will have executive responsibility for policy making, planning, development, implementation and administration of computing and related technologies to support the University's academic and administrative activities. Serving as a vice provost, the CITO will report directly to the executive vice president and provost.

"We are seeking an individual with strong technical expertise, proven leadership skills, effective planning and problem-solving abilities, a fundamental commitment to providing high quality service and a clear vision of technology's role for the future of higher education," Breslin said. "The CITO will have a significant impact on shaping the technological future of Saint Louis University."

Dr. Charles Kirkpatrick, dean of Parks College of Engineering and Aviation, is chair of the CITO search committee. Kirkpatrick said that the position announcement has been advertised nationally and regionally. To date, approximately 60 individuals have responded to the announcement, and the committee is screening these applications. Additional candidates are being sought through personal contacts, and letters have been sent to peer institutions requesting that individuals with appropriate backgrounds be nominated for the CITO position.

"When finalists for the position come on campus to interview, we will invite all interested members of the University community to attend public presentations," Kirkpatrick said. "At these events the candidates will be asked to present their vision of computing and related technologies for a 21st century research university and to answer questions from the audience."

Members of the CITO search committee are John Ashby, director, instructional media center; Lenn Block, senior department administrator, biomedical communications; Robert Clapp, director, academic technology development; Dr. David Crossley, chair, earth and atmospheric sciences; Dr. Mark Ferris, chair, decision sciences and management information systems; Dr. Ned Harris, associate academic vice president; Michael May, SJ, assistant professor, mathematics and computer science; Audrey Newcomer, director, Health Sciences Center library; Dr. Edward Sabin (ex officio), assistant provost; Mark Schmotzer, associate vice president and controller; Dr. Robert Webster, assistant vice president for research; and Dr. Kathleen Wright, assistant professor, School of Public Health. Michael Memos, director of employee relations, is serving as the human resource management liaison for the search.

Breslin said the CITO will be charged with developing a strategic technology plan for the University and will chair the technology planning council and the distance learning task force. The CITO is expected to be in place at the University by July 1.
