Last Year Set A Record for Staff Promotions
Last year was a record year for staff promotions and the operation of the University's in-house temporary services.
"A review of employment activity revealed that 45 percent of all staff positions were filled with current University employees seeking new career opportunities," said Michael Memos, director of employee relations. "We are delighted with these figures. Each time one of our employees is able to find a new position at the University we retain valuable institutional knowledge, challenge our workforce and keep recruitment costs down."
Memos said that employment advertising in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is expensive, costing up to $400 for a single column ad and more than $1,500 for a display ad. "Perhaps even more expensive can be the training time it takes to acclimate a new employee to the policies, procedures and processes at the University," Memos said. This has prompted the University's training department to embark upon developing a "survival skills" training course for new employees.
Saint Louis University's Temporary Service (SLUTEMPS) also had a record year. The service, which provides temporary support to University departments on both campuses, filled 250 assignments during the past year, providing more than 140,000 hours of service to University departments. Operating out of the office of human resources, there are 100 temporaries on assignment throughout the University. Based on current market rates, the SLUTEMP service saved the University more than $340,000 in outside agency fees last year.
The service also has been an excellent recruitment source for full-time vacancies, Memos said. Forty-five members of the service were hired into full-time positions last year. "If we were to include the number of temporary employees going Ôfull time' in our overall employment statistics, we would see that more than 50 percent of all staff vacancies are filled internally," Memos said.
Staff are encouraged to monitor promotional opportunities by viewing the University's job listings on the University's web site at http://www.slu.edu under the heading University Services, or by calling the job information hotline at 977-2265 for the Frost campus and 577-8595 for the Health Sciences Center.
