Employees Encouraged to Help Program that Helps Others

Faculty and staff on the Frost campus can help make life a little easier for their colleagues in need by contributing to the Helping Our Own program. The annual appeal is under way.

"Since the program began five years ago, we have been able to help dozens of employees who have faced financial emergencies," said Mary Flick, campus minister for faculty and staff and coordinator of the program. "Those who request funds are good people who never expected to be asking for our help. They are always so grateful. When I accept their thanks, I remind them that it is the generosity of the people who make up our University community the program makes it possible."

Helping Our Own provides a one-time monetary gift to any full-time or part-time employee experiencing a valid financial crisis. Requests are made in writing and reviewed by a committee of employees. All requests are kept confidential.

"Even $2 or $3 a month goes a long way toward ensuring that the program funds are there for those who need them most," Flick said.

Those who registered for payroll deduction last year must re-register to renew their gift.

"One of the most gratifying aspects of administering the Helping Our Own program is seeing firsthand the generosity of our employees," Flick said. "We make our Jesuit mission real whenever we act as a community concerned for one another and committed to serving those in need."

Employees on the Frost campus will receive a brochure through interoffice mail explaining the program and a letter asking for support. Employees are asked to return the payroll deduction card in the brochure or mail their gift to Helping Our Own, c/o Loyola Center for Campus Ministry, Busch Memorial Center, Room 207.
