Construction on a long-awaited parking garage at the Health Sciences Center will begin this summer.

The structure will have space for approximately 1,000 cars and will be located on the northeast corner of Rutger Street and Theresa Avenue just north of the new School of Allied Health Professions now under construction.

"The garage will mean a net increase of more than 800 spaces," said Kathleen Brady, vice president for facilities management and civic affairs. "It will be completed early in 1999."

In other news, and as a result of the sale of Saint Louis University Hospital, parking arrangements at the Health Sciences Center are being realigned. These changes affected many individual parking assignments, and most changes became effective on March 23.

"All parking cards were reprogrammed for use on the new lot beginning March 23," said Chris Regan, manager of parking and card services. "We have had individuals stationed at the lots west of Grand Boulevard to assist during this transition process and offer assistance as needed."

The following changes were made in the HSC parking program:

• The Vista garage, the Anheuser Busch Institute (ABI) garage, the ABI surface lot and the Duarte lot, located behind Wohl, are the property of Tenet.

• The Pasteur lot will be rented by Tenet from OEM Corp. and will be restricted for use by Tenet employees only.

• The Duarte lot, located behind Wohl, and the Salk lot, located behind the University Medical Group, will continue to provide parking for both Tenet and University employees.

• University and Tenet employees currently parking in the Vista garage and/or ABI garage/lots may continue their parking arrangements in their assigned locations.

• Designated parking lots will be restricted for use by either Tenet employee parking or for use by University employee parking. Restricted lots for use by Tenet employees include Wald, Hiltz and Mullanphy.

• Restricted lots for use by University employees include Schwitalla, Smith, Nightingale, Koch, Flanagan, Connolly, Flexner, Crumpler, Fleming and Harvey. (A map referencing these lots is available from parking and card services.)

• The shuttle service west of Grand will be operated by Tenet. The shuttle services operated by both Tenet and the University will be available for all University faculty, staff, students and Tenet employees. Copies of the shuttle maps may be obtained from the protective services department in the hospital.

Bob Baer will coordinate all parking arrangements for both the University and Tenet employees at the Health Sciences Center, Regan said.

"Please note that the future operation of the parking program is currently under review by the Parking Planning Advisory Committee, which will make recommendations to the President's Coordinating Council for implementation," Regan said. "We will provide employees with these recommendations and any future changes upon completion of their review.

"We appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation during this reassignment and transition period," Regan said.
