University Condolences

Dr. Virginia Beard, assistant professor of education, died June 8 following a long illness. She was 56 and had been with the University for a total of 10 years.

Dr. Beard taught multiculturalism education and group counseling courses. Before coming to the education department she was director of psychological services at Hopewell Center, a staff coordinator in the University's department of community medicine and a behavioral counselor for the St. Louis Juvenile Courts. She also had served as executive director of the Center for Urban Living and as director of student services for the Clayton School District.

Dr. Beard received her bachelor's degree in education from Harris-Stowe State College, a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and a doctorate in consumer education from Saint Louis University.

She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Otis Charles Beard, and two children.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Jerry J. Troxell professor of fine and performing arts and a composer, saxophonist and singer, died June 8. He was 61.

Dr. Troxell had taught in the department of fine and performing arts for seven years. He served as director for the University Orchestra and various ensembles; taught music theory; worked as a composer and performer; was a member of the Symphony Chorus; directed the First Unitarian Church choir; and was a member of the New Music Circle.

Dr. Troxell also had taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis, Webster University, Mary Institute and in the Clayton School District. From 1973 to 1987 he was associate professor of music at Sangamon State University, now the University of Illinois at Springfield. Before that, he was assistant professor of music at Albion (Mich.) College.

Dr. Troxell earned a bachelor's degree in music from Northwest Missouri State University at Maryville, a master's degree in music theory and composition from the University of Iowa at Iowa City and a doctorate in music composition from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

He is survived by his wife, Emily Miller Troxell, and three children.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society of America or to First Unitarian Church of St. Louis.

In the fall, there will be both a University memorial service and a musical memorial service at the Sheldon that will benefit the Leukemia Society. Details will be published when they become available. For more information, call Suzanne Lee at 977-2410.

  • Anjanette Garth Walker, medical secretary in the department of surgery, on the death of her father, Theodore Garth, on May 23.
