New Parking Policies
Start for Fall Semester

Rules Affect Where Employees Can Park

New parking regulations -- but no overall parking fee increases -- will be in place this fall at the Frost campus and Health Sciences Center.

"The Parking Planning Advisory Committee, comprised of students, faculty and staff, met during the spring 1998 semester to review the overall operation of the parking program and address concerns on campus regarding parking," said Chris Regan, manager of parking and card services. "In particular, the group's focus was on the demand of the Laclede garage and providing recommendations that would assist the parking program and encourage the use of the Olive garage. Their recommendations were presented to the President's Coordinating Council for review and approval."

Approved changes in the parking program at the Frost campus are the following:

  • Frost campus faculty and staff whose offices are located in buildings east of Grand must park in designated areas east of Grand between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Parking in areas west of Grand during these times will result in a $25 fine. Parking will be permitted in all designated areas on the Frost campus between 4:01 p.m. and 5:59 a.m. Monday through Friday and on weekends and holidays.

  • Frost campus undergraduate commuter freshmen must park in the Olive garage between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Parking in areas west of Grand Boulevard during these times will result in a $25 fine. Parking will be permitted in all designated areas on the Frost campus between 4:01 p.m. and 5:59 a.m. Monday through Friday and on weekends and holidays.

  • The Gonzaga lot, located at Spring and Laclede, has been changed from a commuter lot to a resident lot.

  • Fines for all parking violations have been increased. "Please park your vehicle in a valid parking space, between two parking stall lines and in your designated parking areas in order to avoid receiving parking violations," Regan said.

  • The Rockhurst garage underneath the Simon Recreation Center has been designated as a premium parking location at a fee of $50 monthly ($600 per year) to all participants.

  • Overnight parking in the University garages and lots will be permitted only if the vehicles display SLU hangtags, overnight hangtags or visitor hangtags.

  • The University reserves the right to tow vehicles that remain on University property in an inoperative, derelict or abandoned condition and/or vehicles that are not in compliance with state regulations.

  • Beginning Aug. 3, new parking cards and hangtags will be issued to all Frost campus faculty and staff in exchange for the old ones.

"Temporary parking disruptions at the Health Sciences Center also will occur this fall semester due to the construction of a new parking garage east of Grand and bordered by Hickory, Ranken, Rutger and Theresa," Regan said.

Parking at the HSC this fall will be affected in the following ways:

  • Parking during the fall semester for all HSC students will be extremely limited. Three student lots were closed permanently on May 18 to make way for the parking garage.

  • The Marie Curie lot will be gated, and access to this lot will be restricted during the 1998-99 school year. Student access to this lot will be on an assigned basis only. The students will be determined via a lottery, and the designated individuals will be notified by mail.

  • During this transition period, students with parking permits are encouraged to park in the Olive garage and take a shuttle to the Health Sciences Center. The shuttle will travel Compton to Chouteau to Carr Lane on a continuous route. This is is a temporary shuttle that is being provided until the HSC garage is completed. Students may elect to purchase a parking permit, pay the 75 cents per hour parking rate or purchase a $2 per day coupon to present to the cashier upon exiting.

  • Anyone remaining on campus after 4 p.m. Monday through Friday should move their cars onto the Florence Nightingale lot or the James McCune Smith lot. These lots also will be available for student parking on weekends and holidays.

  • Approximately 400 spaces in the garage will be available for student parking by the end of 1998. The 1,000-car garage is scheduled for completion early in 1999.

  • Parking arrangements for participants attending conferences at the Health Sciences Center during regular business hours will be extremely limited and will be relocated to the Olive garage on the Frost campus during the fall semester and first few months of the spring semester. Departments will be responsible for providing shuttles for their participants and may contact the Transportation Coordinator at 977-7128 to coordinate the arrangements.

  • Parking arrangements for participants attending conferences at the Health Sciences Center during the evening or weekend hours will be provided at the Health Sciences Center and should be coordinated by calling parking and card services at 977-3465.
