Grant Brings the 'TIPS' Program to Saint Louis University
|
A grant will help train 500 Saint Louis University students in preventing alcohol misuse.
Saint Louis University's division of student development has received funding for "TIPS" training for 500 incoming students during orientation this fall. The TIPS (Training for Intervention ProcedureS) program trains students to intervene with their peers to prevent alcohol-related tragedies on or off campus. On Aug. 22, Saint Louis University will hold a TIPS training day to kick off the fall semester.
Paul Stark, SJ, vice provost for student development, accepted the grant on behalf of the University. "The misuse of alcohol is a major concern for every college campus," he said. "TIPS training will provide our students the skills they need to intervene in situations where alcohol is consumed and to prevent alcohol misuse for themselves and their peers. With this grant, we'll be able to reach an entire class of students. We hope to provide that educational opportunity to each incoming class."
Universities across the country were invited to submit proposals to incorporate TIPS training into their fall orientation programs. John Burnside, university program manager for TIPS, initiated the grant. "With TIPS we offer universities an educational alternative to restrictive policies such as banning alcohol on campus," he said. "This is the first of many grants we intend to offer universities who want to take a positive approach to this issue."
In addition to the 500 manuals that Saint Louis University will receive, Stark plans to train almost all of the remaining 400 students in this year's incoming freshman class. Returning Saint Louis University students and some staff members will become certified as TIPS trainers and conduct training for freshmen.
