Alumni Merit Winners Announced


Alumni Merit Award from the College of Arts and Sciences. Bannister graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1961 with a bachelor of science degree in general studies. He was a member of the Saint Louis University board of trustees and executive vice president of Bakewell Corp.

  • W. Winston Chan will receive the William V. Stauder, SJ, Alumni Award from the Graduate School. Chan received his master of science degree in geophysics from Saint Louis University in 1981 and his doctorate in geophysics in 1983. Chan is president of Multimax Inc. He is a visiting investigator with the Carnegie Institute of Washington.
  • John A. Coleman, SJ, is the winner of the George Klubertanz, SJ, Alumni Merit Award from the College of Philosophy and Letters. Coleman received a bachelor of arts degree from the college in 1960 and a master of arts degree from the Graduate School in 1961. Coleman is a professor of religion and society at Loyola Marymount University.
  • Donald R. Kozlowski is the winner of the Institute of Technology's Alumni Merit Award. Kozlowski received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Saint Louis University in 1959. He worked for McDonnell Douglas from 1959 until he retired as a senior vice president in 1997. Kozlowski worked as director of offensive air support mission analysis from 1976 to 1977 for the U.S. Air Force.
  • Dr. Jacob J. Lippert is the winner of the Dental School Alumni Merit Award. Lippert received his doctor of dental sciences degree from Saint Louis University in 1959. He is a member of the Greater St. Louis Dental Society, the Missouri Dental Association and the American Dental Association.
  • C. Drew Morton will receive the Allied Health Alumni Merit Award. Morton received his physician's assistant certificate from Saint Louis University in 1979, his bachelor of science degree in medical science in 1984 and his master of public health degree in 1990. Morton is executive director of Danbury Health Systems and a physician assistant with the U.S. Navy.
  • Pauline V. Smith is the recipient of the Black Alumni Association's Distinguished Service Award. Smith received her master of business administration degree from Saint Louis University in 1977. Smith is president of Smith & Smith Associates.
  • Kenneth E. Stanger is the winner of the Oliver L. Parks Alumni Merit Award from Parks College of Engineering and Aviation. Stanger received a bachelor of science degree in aeronautics in 1959 from Parks. He is chairman of the aircraft maintenance engineering department at Parks.
  • Dr. Eleanor J. Sullivan will receive the School of Nursing Alumni Merit Award. Sullivan received her bachelor of science degree in nursing from Saint Louis University in 1975 and her doctorate in 1981. She is a professor at the University of Kansas School of Nursing and president of Sigma Theta Tau.
  • Gregory C. Van Pelt is the winner of the School of Public Health's Alumni Merit Award. Van Pelt received a master of health administration from Saint Louis University in 1976. Van Pelt is chief executive officer of Providence Health Plans.
  • Chanin Vongkusolkit will receive the International Alumni Merit Award from the International Programs of Academic Division. Vongkusolkit is a 1977 graduate of Saint Louis University with a master of business administration degree in finance. He is the board director and president of Banpu Public Co. in Bangkok, Thailand.
  • Carol A. Weir is the winner of the School of Social Service's Distinguished Alumni Award. Weir received a master's degree in social work from the School of Social Service in 1972. She is a program consultant for Crawford-Weir Solutions.
  • Valee Willman, M.D., will receive the Alumni Merit Award from the School of Medicine. Willman received his doctor of medicine degree from Saint Louis University in 1951. In 1972, Willman performed the first heart transplant in the Midwest. He is chairman emeritus for the department of surgery at Saint Louis University Hospital.
  • Anita M. Wray will receive the School of Business and Administration's Joseph E. Boland, SJ, Alumni Merit Award. Wray received her master's degree in business administration from Saint Louis University in 1983. She is vice president and controller of Ralston Purina Co.
