Petruska Takes Over Hematology and Oncology

Jo Bouhasin did not have to fill out an application for employment when she came to Saint Louis University.

In 1963 Paul J. Petruska came to Saint Louis University as a medical student. Now in his 35th year at the University, Petruska has been appointed director of the division of hematology and oncology.

Petruska said he came along during the "birth of medical oncology" during the early 1970s. His areas of expertise include leukemia, lymphomas, breast cancer, sarcomas and esophageal cancer.

While at the School of Medicine, Petruska has conducted groundbreaking clinical research involving diagnosis and treatments. These include diagnostic tests using cytogenetics, gallium scans, use of Her-2/neu oncogene as a prognostic test, and most recently PET scanning. He has been involved in the leading edge of treatment endeavors in non-HodgkinÕs lymphomas, acute leukemias, adjuvant therapy of breast cancer and esophageal cancer.

One of the major reasons why Petruska has been at Saint Louis University for so many years is his love of teaching. He has won "Best Teacher of the Year" two times from the department of internal medicine.

"There is clinical care, research, community service and hospital service," Petruska said. "That is all important and part of who I am, but if you asked me what I am most proud of it is my teaching. That is the great reward."
