Convenience Store To Open

The basement of Clemens Hall is getting a facelift for the fall semester, courtesy of student development and Sodexho Dining Services.

Clemens will be home to a new Campus Convenience Store, offering one-stop shopping. The store is only the beginning for the lower level of Clemens, remodeled to include a study area and recreation area with pool tables and a television set.

Greg Patterson, director of business administration for the division of student development, said another option being discussed for Clemens is a coffee cart outside the convenience store, which would remain open after the store closes.

"It is an effort to provide another service to the students," said Joe Hodes, president of the Student Government Association. "I've been very impressed with what Sodexho has done and what they are planning to do and just with the company in general."

The University also is considering opening a coffee house in Busch Memorial Center, Patterson said. He said discussions are under way with local and national vendors.

"Coffee shops are a big thing in the Ô90s," Hodes said. "We want a University coffee shop that will keep students on campus and in a University facility."

Hodes said the coffee houses are an important development now, particularly because the owners of The Grind, formerly at the corner of Spring and Lindell, opted not to renew their lease. "The University worked hard to keep The Grind, but the tenants did not want to renew," Hodes said. "Student government and student development felt we needed to move forward and grab that crowd."

Another Campus Convenience Store will open in Marchetti Towers, Patterson said. The Clemens convenience store will replace the convenience store now in Fusz Hall. This will leave more room for seating in the Fusz food court.
