Dr. Marty Allen Ferman , (aerospace and mechanical engineering) attended the Second International Conference on Nonlinear Problems in Aviation and Aerospace at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where he organized a session, "Nonlinear Problems in Structural Dynamics of Aircraft, Missiles and Spacecraft," in which six invited papers were given.
Jeannette Pierce (Pius Library) presented a poster and moderated a presentation, "Going Global: International Exchanges and Visits," at the 1998 annual conference of the American Library Association. Pierce serves as chair of the IRC/IRRT Joint Committee on International Exchanges.
From the department of science and mathematics: Dr. Jean Potvin presented a co-authored paper, "In-flight Study of Pressure Differentials Near the Surfaces of an Inflating Ram-Air Parachute," at the 16th AIAA Applied Aerodynamics Conference in Albuquerque, N.M. The paper also has been printed in the conference proceedings. Potvin gave a talk, "Parachute Inflation: An Engineering Problem As Well As One of Applied Physics," at the Universite Laval in Quebec City, Canada. A co-authored paper by Dr. Ian H. Redmount has been accepted for publication in The Physics Teacher. Dr. Jacob Sukhodolsky delivered a lecture on "System Testing Optimization" at the IMACS '98 International Conference on Scientific Computing and Mathematical Modeling in Alicante, Spain. An article by Sukhodolsky, "Development Of Evolutionary Modeling Technology To Analyze And Forecast Artificial Water Ecosystems," was accepted for publication in October in the International Journal of Applied Science & Computations.Dr. David JacksonJackson participated in the International Conference on Algorithmic Problems in Groups & Semigroups, held in Lincoln, Neb., May 11 to 15.Dr. Vijai Dixit attended a conference on "Quark Matter At Finite Density" at the University of Biele-feld, Germany. Dixit presented a poster, "Artificial Neural Networks as Rapid Interpolators of Interaction Potentials for Polyatomic Ion/Neutral Systems," at the 194th WE-Hereaus Workshop on "Scientific Applications of Neural Nets" in Bad Honnef, Germany. This poster reported work performed by Dixit and Dr. Larry Viehland. Dr. Thalanayar S. Santhanamhas been elected to the office of president-elect of the Saint Louis University chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society. Following a one-year term in this position, he will become president of the chapter.
Dr. Gail Furman ((curricular affairs) recently accepted an award on behalf of the School of Medicine. The award was from the American Red Cross and was for support of CPR training of medical students.
Dr. Seung H. Kim (Institute of International Business) has been appointed a vice chairman of the World Trade Center St. Louis by St. Louis County Executive Buzz Westfall.

Melvin G. Burkart (aviation sciences) presented "Lessons Learned" at the USAIG Safety Seminar. Two members of the Flying Billikens, Matt Smyk and Eric Wandel, also attended.
Dr. Barbara Woods (African American studies) participated in the 32nd Race Relations Institute this summer at Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn., and served as the moderator of a plenary session on church burnings.
Richard W. Kamm (aerospace technology) received the FAA's Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award. This prestigious award, the highest given by the FAA to aviation-maintenance personnel, was presented at the St. Louis Flight Standards District Office's 1998 Aviation Maintenance Safety Counselors Awards Ceremony. The award is named in honor of U.S. aviation's first certified mechanic. This award recognizes Kamm for his more than 50 years of service and contributions to the aviation maintenance industry and symbolizes the recognition of his peers for his excellence in aviation maintenance as a technician, leader, educator and aviation safety advocate. University professors emerti Kenneth E. Stanger and James W. Bryer are two past recipients of this award. During the same ceremony and on behalf of Parks College, Dr. Chuck Kirkpatrick accepted a "Certificate of Recognition" from the FAA. Parks College was recognized by the St. Louis FAA office for its efforts in aiding the local aviation maintenance safety counselors in their mission of promoting aviation safety through continuing education and counseling of area aviation maintenance personnel.
Christine Werner (preventive cardiology programs) was a guest speaker at a health fair held at the Robert A. Young LIFE Center. She provided tips to prevent heart disease to federal employees.
Garth Hallett, SJ (philosophy and letters) published Priorities and Christian Ethics as part of the Cambridge University Press series on "New Studies in Christian Ethics."
Dr. Reuven R. Levary (decision sciences and management information systems) and doctoral student Maria Joseph Christie co-wrote a paper, "The Use of Simulation in Planning the Transportation of Patients to Hospitals Following a Disaster," that has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Medical Systems.
Dr. James T. Fisher (theological studies and history) lectured on "The Romance of Catholic Anticommunism" at John Carroll University's Institute of Humanities on April 14. Also in April, Fisher presented a program on "Jazz, Blues and American Spirituality" to a Delta Teachers Academy Interdisciplinary Team in Lee County, Ark. Fisher has been awarded a Faculty Fellowship from the University of Notre Dame's Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism in support of his book project, Covering the Waterfront: Culture and Ideology in the Catholic Metropolis, 1936-1960.
Dr. Angeles Encinar (modern and classical languages) gave a plenary session on "El Genero Epistolar en las Narradoras Espanolas Actuales" at the Congreso Internacional de Narrativa Espanola, which took place in May at the Universidad de Castilla La Mancha. She was a round-table participant during the same conference on "Madrid e Jijas en la Literatra Espanola Contemporanea." Encinar also participated in the Universidad de Neuchatel's Seminaire d'Espagnol de 3'eme Cycle: La dissolution des frontieres generiques dans la litterature hispanique contemporaine, May 26 to 30, where she presented a paper, "El arte de contar historias y los personajes marginales in la narrativa breve de J." Llamazares.'
From the department of psychology:Dr. James Korn was a member of a team that reviewed the psychology department at Eastern Illinois University this spring. He also was elected to fellow status in division one of the American Psycholoigical Association. Dr. Eddie Clark presented a paper, "Differences in Persuasion of Tailored and Untailored Weight Loss Materials: An Application of the Elaboration Likelihood Model," at the annual Social Psychologists Around the Midwest conference at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. Dr. Allan Barclay has won the Richard Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award from the board of directors of the Missouri Psychological Association.
Laura Geiser (public relations/publications) chaired the steering committee and organized the second annual conference of the Association of Editors of Jesuit Publications, which was held on the Frost campus in July. The conference attracted college, university, high school and province editors from across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Kathleen Carroll Parvis gave a presentation on graphic design at the conference.
Susan McMane (fine and performing arts) was a featured presenter at the American Choral Directors Association meeting in Corpus Christi, Texas. She gave a session on "Choral Literature for Women's Voices." McMane also has been voted "Music Educator of the Year" by the St. Louis chapter of the American Guild of Organists and was presented with the award in absentia on May 18 when she was away on tour in Italy with the University Mastersingers.
A study by Dr. L. Cassandra Hamrick (modern and classical languages), "Borel, Gautier and Baudelaire: From the Periphery of Romanticism to the Center of Modernism," will appear later this year in Poetry and Politics in France: 1830-1890, published by Rodopi in Amsterdam. Her article on "Gautier and Anarchy in Art" will appear in Rereading Gautier, also to be published by Rodopi. Her review of Thˇophile Gautier, conteur fantastique et merveilleus by Peter Whyte of the University of Durham appeared in Nineteenth-Century French Studies.
Dr. James F. Scott (English) has produced a one-hour video documentary on St. Louis architecture, Articulate Space, which recently was broadcast on KETC/VideoNine and the Higher Education Channel. The documentary examines how the city's architecture affects and reflects the lives of its citizens. It features notable buildings, parks, streets and neighborhoods, as well as expert commentators. The documentary was produced under the auspices of Saint Louis University, with funding provided by the Missouri Humanities Council; Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts; American Institute of Architects, St. Louis Chapter; Thalden Corporation Architects; and the St. Louis Regional Arts Commission. Technical assistance was provided by KETC.
Virginia M. Herrmann, M.D. (surgery) has been elected president of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, the nation's leading interdisciplinary organization in the field of clinical nutrition and metabolic support. The society includes more than 6,000 health care professionals (dietitians, nurses, pharmacists and physicians) and offers a variety of educational programs and publications for its members, including two scientific journals, audio teleconferences and an annual Clinical Congress.
Saint Louis University received a merit award for magazine advertising in the 13th annual Admissions Advertising Awards competition. The awards are presented by the Admissions Marketing Report, the national newspaper of admissions marketing. The ads were produced through the University's office of public relations under the direction of John Kerr, associate vice president for University public relations.
Dr. Belden Lane (theological studies and American Studies) has written a new book, The Solace of Fierce Landscapes: A Journey into the Spirituality of Desert and Mountain, published by Oxford University Press.
