The parking crunch at the Health Sciences Center will be eased a bit later this month.
On Dec. 18, 400 spaces in the first phase of a new parking garage will be ready for use. Drivers will enter the structure near the corner of Ranken and Rutger streets.
"Additional spaces will be available as the construction progresses," said Kathleen Brady, vice president for facilities management and civic affairs.
Brady expects all 1,000 spaces in the first phase of the parking garage to be completed by March. Phase-one construction is bounded by Theresa Avenue on the west, Hickory Street on the north, Ranken Avenue on the east and Rutger Street on the south.
When the first 400 spaces open, Brady said they will be reserved for students. "Right now there's only one student parking lot on the Health Sciences Center campus," she said.
Phase two of the parking initiative, a second garage one block immediately west of the garage now under construction, will begin when the University acquires a building from the city of St. Louis. This 875-space garage is bounded by Hickory Street on the north, Carr Lane on the west, Rutger Street on the south and Theresa Avenue on the east.
In other parking news at the Health Sciences Center, Chris Regan, manager of parking and card services, said that beginning Dec. 11, the Madam Curie lot at the Health Science Center will be available for student use on a first-come, first-served basis.
Although it was a student lot this semester, it was for use only by students who had won the right to park there based on a special lottery.
Regan said that both the Madam Curie lot and the new spaces in the garage will be available only for students with parking permits.
"It will be cardholder access only," she said, adding that no visitor parking or faculty/staff parking will be available in those areas at this time.
