Alpha Sigma Nu, the national Jesuit Honor Society, is taking applications for the 1999 National Jesuit Book Award.

In 1979 Alpha Sigma Nu established and endowed the National Jesuit Book Award to recognize outstanding publishing achievements by faculty and administrators of the 28 U.S. Jesuit colleges and universities.

Awards are given on a three-year category rotation: humanities, physical and social sciences, and professional studies. In recent years Saint Louis University professors have done quite well. In 1996, the National Jesuit Book Award in history went to Dr. Mark Neely Jr., then a professor in the departments of history and American studies. The 1997 award in social sciences went to Dr. Timothy J. Lomperis, chair of the department of political science.

The category for 1999 is humanities, which includes any work done in history, literature, philosophy and theology. Three $1,000 cash awards will be given for the best books in the humanities.

All full or part-time faculty, administrators or those with emeritus status at one of the 28 Jesuit colleges or universities who has published a book during 1996, 1997 or 1998 are eligible for the award.

Magazine articles, unpublished monographs, subsequent editions of books previously awarded by Alpha Sigma Nu, works of fiction, painting, sculptures and recordings are not eligible for the award.

The Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities conducts the review and selection process based on content, style, scholarship and effectiveness of presentation. All submissions must be postmarked before March 1, and the award will be announced Oct. 1.

All submissions must be made by the author of the book. The application and two copies of the book, which cannot be returned, must be sent to: Alpha Sigma Nu, The National Jesuit Book Award, Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, One Dupont Circle, Suite 405, Washington, D.C. 20036.
