The much-anticipated construction of recreational facilities at the old Laclede Town site should begin this month.

The University expects to take title to the property on the northwest side of Compton and Laclede avenues sometime in December, said Kathleen Brady, vice president for facilities management and civic affairs. The land will be turned over to the University by the city of St. Louis.

"Construction should start immediately after we take title," Brady said. "It will take about six months to complete the project."

The first phase of the Laclede Town project was completed earlier this year with the construction of tennis courts near the southwest corner of Laclede and Compton. The courts opened for use last spring.

The next phase will include additional outdoor recreational facilities. Brady said that site plans for the facilities now are being finalized.
