To celebrate the papal visit and to discuss John Paul II's ideals, Saint Louis University will host a speaker's series, "A Celebration of the Thought of Pope John Paul II," on Jan. 22 and 23.

The conference will feature several prominent speakers, including Helen Alvare, the national spokeswoman for the American Catholic Bishops on pro-life issues. She will speak on Friday, Jan. 22, the anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision. Carl Bernstein, the journalist who helped to break the Watergate scandal and author of His Holiness: John Paul II and the Hidden History of Our Time, will speak Saturday, Jan. 23, on the Pope's role in the fall of communism.

Also speaking Jan. 22 is John Kavanaugh, SJ, professor of philosophy. He will speak on "John Paul II and Philosophy." Other speakers will discuss the pope's thoughts on theology, culture, non-Catholics and family. Speakers are George Weigel, a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center; Avery Dulles, SJ, professor of religion and society at Fordham University; Jerram Barrs, director of the Francis Schaeffer Institute; Janet Smith, professor of philosophy at the University of Dallas; and Robert Sirico, co-founder and president of the Action Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty.

The conference is free for faculty, staff and students with a valid ID.
