CASUAL FRIDAYS: The University's Friday casual dress days held during the summer have been extended throughout the school year. Please note a few guidelines when dressing casually. Appropriate "business casual" attire includes dress slacks, skirts and collared shirts. Jeans, athletic wear, T-shirts, casual sandals and shorts are not included in "business casual" attire. If you have any questions about the policy, talk to your departmental supervisor.

MADE A DIFFERENCE: On Tuesday, Oct. 19, 375 Saint Louis University faculty, staff and students participated in the "SLU Make a Difference Day" by volunteering at 50 different local service agencies. Later that week, on Saturday, Oct. 24, 101 members of the University community participated in the National Make a Difference Day.

SCHOLARSHIPS GIVEN: The Home Health Foundation of the Visiting Nurse Association of Greater St. Louis awarded $20,000 in scholarships to students in the department of physical therapy at the School of Allied Health Professions and students in the School of Nursing. The awards symbolize the foundation's ongoing commitment to the education of physical therapists and nurses at Saint Louis University. Physical therapy scholarship recipients were Doug Rosenmayer, Adam Johnson and Kara Lampe. Nursing scholarship recipients were Wendy Marie O'Leary, Angela Tipton and Carrie M. Linenfelser.

NATIONAL RECRUITING: For the past two years, Saint Louis University alumni and parents across the country have collaborated with the undergraduate admission office to recruit students. Members of the Alumni and Parents Ambassador Program (APAP) attend hometown college fairs and talk with students in their area who are considering Saint Louis University. More than 200 alumni and parents in more than 15 cities participate in the program. Last year, APAP members attended 63 college fairs and called more than 1,700 students.

NATIONAL DENIM DAY: On Oct. 9, the University participated in National Denim Day to raise money for breast cancer research and treatment. Participants raised $1,550 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the nation's largest private funder of research dedicated solely to breast cancer.

REINERT HONORED: The University of Scranton presented its fourth Pedro Arrupe, SJ, Award for Distinguished Contributions to Ignatian Mission and Ministries to Chancellor Emeritus Paul C. Reinert, SJ, at a special assembly on Sept. 25. Dr. Paul J. Shore, associate professor of educational studies, delivered the main address, which noted Reinert's many contributions to Catholic higher education. The Arrupe Award is named for the late Pedro Arrupe, SJ, the superior general of the Society of Jesus from 1965 to 1983. The award recognizes men and women for their outstanding contributions in a wide variety of Ignatian-inspired ministries.

PENNY BOWLS: This fall the telephone services office collected pennies and other unwanted change in a fish bowl and raised $150 for those who could not afford a Thanksgiving meal. Thanks to the success of the program, telephone services will leave the fish bowl in DuBourg Hall, Room 117, through Christmas to collect donations for Christmas meals.

TEACHING VIDEOS: New teaching videos and other media that were purchased this summer have been uploaded to the Instructional Media Center's World Wide Web-based catalog and also are available on the SLUVIEW Gopher VAX system. The materials are for teaching use only and may be placed on reserve by faculty at the IMC circulation desk for individualized student viewing. MANSION HONORED: The Associated General Contractors (AGC) of St. Louis honored BSI Constructors Inc. with the Construction Keystone Project of the Year Award for BSI's renovations to the School of Law's Queen's Daughters Mansion. The AGC honors construction firms who use skill, teamwork and innovation to bring lasting contributions to the community.

NEW SERVICE IN BMC: For the convenience of faculty, staff and students, there is a "One Stop Mailing and Copy Center" in the Lower Level of Busch Memorial Center. The center will package and ship items, as well as provide other services, such as passport photos. The hours of the center are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Billiken Bucks, checks and cash are accepted. The store reopens on Jan. 11, when the students return from the Christmas holiday.

POPE OCTAVIAN: William Barnaby Faherty, SJ, professor emeritus of history, recently published his third novel and 26th book, The Call of Pope Octavian. The novel follows a female journalist from St. Louis who travels to Rome to report on a papal conclave and hopes for a pope who will heed women's requests for a more active place in the church. The book, published by JKL Associates Inc., retails for $14.95 and is available at bookstores or through the Midwest Jesuit Archives at 361-5122.

NONPROFIT MANAGEMENT: Saint Louis University administrators, in collaboration with the Nonprofit Services Consortium (NSC) and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (SIUE), are researching ways to develop and implement an inter-institutional doctoral degree program in nonprofit management and leadership. Representatives of Saint Louis University, the NSC and SIUE have recognized that there is a need for a faith-based focus in nonprofit management, leadership and community development. The NSC is a broad coalition of higher education institutions, service providers and grant makers whose mission is to strengthen the nonprofit sector and build better communities. Saint Louis University and SIUE already offer courses in social service and other related fields that would fit well within a degree program in nonprofit management and leadership. Additional courses are needed, particularly covering faith-based nonprofit organizations for community development corporations. With the help of NSC, these courses will be developed.

NEW LEADER: Dr. Noreen Carrocci, former professor and chairwoman of the communication department, is the new vice president of academic affairs at Spring Hill College, a fellow Jesuit school in Mobile, Ala. Before her time at Saint Louis University, she was the dean of undergraduate college and graduate school of arts and sciences at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn.
