From the School of Law: John Ammann received a Volunteer Lawyer Award at the Legal Services of eastern Missouri Awards Luncheon. The Housing and Finance Clinic, under Ammann's direction, received a favorable mention in the Department of Housing and Urban Development's new publication, Law School Involvement in Community Development.Jack Dunsford was a discussion leader on proposed revisions in the Uniform Arbitration Act at the fall education conference of the National Academy of Arbitrators in Kansas City, Mo. Tonie FitzGibbon presented "Supreme Court '97-'98 Term: Divining Principles From Competing Legal Interests" at a program on "Surviving the employment Law explosion," co-sponsored by the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis and the William C. Wefel Center for employment Law. Stan Frankowski edited, and co-wrote a chapter titled "Legal Responses to AIDS in Poland" for Legal Responses to AIDS in Comparative Perspective, published by Kluwer Law International. Joel Goldstein presented a paper on "The Presidency, the Take Care Clause and the Rule of Law" at the School of Law's symposium on "The Presidency: 25 Years After Watergate." His article on "Reconceptualizing Admiralty: A Pedagogical Approach" was published in the October issue of the Journal of Maritime Law and Commerce. Tim Greaney spoke on "Antitrust and Health Care" at the Missouri Bar Annual Meeting. Kitty Kelly and Dana Underwood conducted a day-and-a-half workshop on legal writing for the third annual Brigadier General Hemingway Paralegal Symposium sponsored by the U.S. Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base. Underwood also gave two presentations on legal writing and editing for the Association of Labor Relations Agencies Annual Conference. Carol Needham published an article, "The State's Regulatory Response to the Globalization of the Legal Profession: The Licensing of Foreign Legal Consultants in the United States," for the Fordham International Law Journal. In October, she was elected president of the Central States Law Schools Association. John O'Brien published 1998 supplements to two books: Missouri Law of evidence and Missouri evidentiary Foundations. Josef Rohlik's article, "Milosevic is Key to Balkan Solution," was published as a commentary article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. eric San Juan spoke on "Creating a Research Agenda for a Social Science Dissertation" at the annual conference of Fellows of the Ford Foundation, held in California. Leland Ware spoke on "Setting the Stage for Brown" at a 50th anniversary symposium titled "Lawyers of Conscience in the American South," presented by the Gate City Bar Association in Atlanta Steve Thaman presented a paper on "Questions of Fact and Law in Russian Jury Trials: The Practice of the Cassational Courts under the Jury Laws of 1864 and 1993." Thaman was on a panel presenting papers on "Organized Crime in Russia" at the 50th annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies, held in Boca Raton, Fla. He has published several articles, including "Spain Returns to Trial by Jury" in Hastings International and Comparative Law Review; "Russia's New Jury Court" in Justicia; "Pitfalls for the Russian Defense Lawyer in Jury Trials" as an afterword to the book Defense in the Criminal Trial: A Handbook for Lawyers, which he co-edited; and "Plea Bargaining or Abbreviated Forms of the Criminal Trial: Which Path Will Russia Take?" published in Russian Justice.

From the department of earth and atmospheric sciences: Dr. Yeong Jer Lin has accepted an invitation from the National Science Council and National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan, to participate this month in the Workshop on Mesometeorology and Radar Meteorology. Researchers there will discuss collaborative research in flash flooding between scientists from the United States and Taiwan. Lin also attended the annual member meeting of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), held in Boulder, Colo. While in Boulder, Lin attended the 11th meeting of the Heads and Chairs of Programs in Atmospheric, Oceanic, Hydrologic, and Related Sciences, sponsored jointly by the American Meteorological Society and UCAR. Three of Lin's graduate students, James Kagol, Merl Heinlein and Jim O'Sullivan, presented research papers in Minneapolis at the 19th Conference on Severe Local Storms, sponsored by the American Meteorological Society. Dr. Brian Mitchell presented a series of three lectures on seismic wave attenuation in the earth's crust and upper mantle at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy. Dr. Joachim Dorsch presented "Petrophysical Characteristics of Saprolite from the Maryville Limestone at SWASA 7 on the Oak Ridge Reservation, Tennessee" at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America, held in Toronto. Dr. Aybige Akinci and Roberto Ortega presented research results at the 1998 Mid-America earthquake Center Research Assistant Symposium, held at Rend Lake, Ill. Akinci reported her work on "Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Maps for the Central United States: Ground Motion Relations," and Ortega discussed his research on "Seismic Hazard Analysis in the Central United States: evaluation of Hazard Maps." Both studies are collaborative efforts with Dr. Robert Herrmann of the department. The research symposium was attended by individuals from eight universities and industries and was organized for the Mid-America earthquake Center by Dr. Charles Ammon and Melanie Whittington, Dr. James Moore and two graduate students, Stephen Klaus and Patrick Market, attended the annual meeting of the National Weather Association in Oklahoma City. Moore presented two papers: "An Analysis of a ÔSynoptic Type' Heavy Rainfall event: Influence of the Right entrance Region of an Upper-Level Jet Streak" and "Significant Rainfall Climatology for Missouri and Southern Illinois." Market, a doctoral candidate, also presented a paper. Moore is the president-elect of the National Weather Association and will assume his role of president on Jan. 1. Moore also attended a recent community planning workshop for the Program for the Advancement of Geoscience education, held in Warrenton, Va.

From the department of educational studies: Dr. Paul Shore presented "Loving the Souls, Hating the Bodies: Jesuit-Jewish Relations in Bohemia in the eighteenth Century" at the Conference on Christianity and the Holocaust, held in Princeton, N.J. Dr. Nikki Murdick co-presented the following papers at the Institute for Inclusive education in St. Louis and at the Illinois Chapter of the American Association on Mental Retardation, held in Collinsville, Ill.: "Cross-Cultural, Family-Centered Applications of Technology to Assist in the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities" and "Functional Assessment of Behavior: A Method for Complying with IDeA." Murdick also co-presented "1997 IDeA Amendments: A Question of equity" for the Arkansas Chapter Council for exceptional Children, held in Hot Springs, Ark. At the same conference Murdick was a facilitator for roundtable discussions on "Conditions in Teaching" and "The Changing Role of Special educators," and he served on a panel discussing the "Issue of Do Not Resuscitate Orders in School Classrooms."

Maureen Valente (communication disorders) presented an invited workshop on "New Trends and Remediation Strategies in Working With Hearing-Impaired Children" to the Francis Howell School District in St. Charles, Mo.

From the department of psychology: Dr. eddie Clark gave a presentation to the staff of the Missouri Institute of Mental Health on "Theory and Research in African American Psychology." Clark recently participated in the "Minority Faculty in Residence" program at Illinois State University. During the four-day program, Clark lived in a residence hall apartment and discussed research and administrative issues with faculty, deans, the vice president, the president and students. Clark also gave a public lecture titled "You Just Don't Understand!: Interpersonal Understanding in Close Relationships." He also was interviewed by both campus radio stations. Dr. James Korn presented an invited address, "Learning to Teach and Becoming a Teacher," at the Mid-American Conference on the Teaching of Psychology, held in evansville, Ind. He and graduate student Jeff Dyche also presented a working session on "Developing Teaching By Direct Observation."

From the department of theological studies: Dr. William M. Shea attended the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher education at Canisius College. His paper, "Jesuits and Scholarship: A Reading of the Macelwane Report," was the subject of discussion in one session. He also attended the meeting of the Commission on Catholic Scholarship, held in Washington, D.C. The commission is designing an Institute for the Advanced Study of Catholicism and attempting to raise $20 million in matching funds. Dr. Kenneth B. Steinhauser wrote a book chapter, "The Aesthetics of Paradise: Images of Women in Christian Antiquity," for equal at Creation: Sexism, Society, and Christian Thought. Dr. Michael McClymond received the Frank S. and elizabeth D. Brewer Prize from the American Society of Church History for his recently published book, encounters With God: An Approach to the Theology of Jonathan edwards. The award is given annually for the best first book on the history of Christianity. Dr. James T. Fisher published an article, "John M. Corridan, S.J., and the Battle for the Soul of the Waterfront, 1946-1954," for the autumn issue of U.S. Catholic Historian. His article, "Catholicism Ascendant: American Popular Culture in the 1950s," appears in the winter issue of Culturefront. Fisher has written seven entries for American National Biography, a new multivolume reference work published by Oxford University Press. Among these are entries on John Coltrane, Dorothy Day and Jack Kerouac. The University of Massachusetts Press has published a paperback edition of Fisher's book Dr. America: The Lives of Thomas A. Dooley, 1927-1961.

From the department of history: Dr. Philip Gavitt presented a paper, "Putting Back the ÔClass' into the Classical Tradition: Alessandro Piccolomini and the Civilizing of a Young Nobleman," at the meeting of the International Society for the Classical Tradition, held in Tubingen, Germany. Gavitt also presented "Clausura and Confinement: Institutions for Nuns, Wives, and Prostitutes in Sixteenth- and Seventeenth-Century Tuscany" at the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference, held in Toronto. Dr. Daniel L. Schlafly Jr. presented "The Princess and the Publicist: ekaterina Dashkova on Casera's Vie de Catherine II: Imperatrice de Russie at the 25th St. Louis Conference on Manuscript Studies.

John Buck (residence life) was the keynote speaker and a featured presenter at the Fall Leadership Conference at Western Illinois University. Buck addressed more than 200 student leaders on leadership during his opening keynote address and presented programs on ethical decision making, group dynamics and culture shock in organizations. In May, Buck received the Dan Hallenbeck Distinguished Lifetime Service Award from the National Association of College and University Residence Halls Inc. for service to the organization. Buck was nominated by students from SLU's Residence Hall Association, an organization he advises.

Dr. John Pauly (communication) published an article, "Finding Ourselves in the New Journalism: A Struggle for Meaning in a Chaotic Time," for the Fall 1998 issue of Media Studies Journal. The special topic of that issue was "1968." Among the other invited contributors were David Halberstam, Richard Reeves, Todd Gitlin, Jules Witcover, Roger Wilkins, Tom Wicker and Randall Kennedy.

From the department of marketing: Dr. Lyn S. Amine has had four classic marketing cases reprinted for the third time in a new 1999 edition of Cateora's leading textbook International Marketing. They are: "The Not-So-Wonderful World of Disney," "Asian Yuppies -- Having It All," "Ge Lighting Attacks the Triad Markets" and "Caterpillar in europe." Amine and Dr. Brett Boyle addressed a group of Russian entrepreneurs visiting St. Louis as guests of the World Affairs Council of St. Louis. The presentations were organized by MBA student Olga Khuditsina-Dennon. Amine gave an introduction to global marketing, and Boyle addressed issues relating to product positioning. Dr. Emmanuel Uwalaka (political science) presented "Knowledge and Attitudes Related to AIDS in Nigerian Students: The Case of the University of Nigeria, NSUKKA" to the Third World Studies Conference in Omaha, Neb.

From the department of biology: Dr. Dorothy Feir presented "The effect of Temperature on Reproduction and Activity of Multiple Strains of Borrelia Burgdorferi" with graduate student Sarah Vordtriede at the annual meeting of the entomological Society of America, held in Las Vegas. Feir also presented "Antibodies to Borrelia sp. in Missouri Dogs" with graduate student D. Malewski at the same conference. Dr. Robert Bolla presented a paper, "Pathogenicity and the Potential for Spread of Pinewood Nematode," at the Symposium on Sustainability of Pine Forests in Relation to Pine Wilt and Decline, held in Tokyo. The paper was co-written by Dr. Rob Wood. Bolla also presented lectures on potential strategies for management of soybean cyst nematode for the Institute of Agriculture in Tsukuba, Japan, and advised representatives of Miyagi Perfecture on management of pinewood nematode.

Dr. Maria Lynn (Center for Teaching excellence) published an article, "Teaching through Diversity," in the fall issue of College Teaching.

From the department of chemistry: Dr. Ronald See presented a seminar, "The Analysis of Chemical Bonding Phenomenon in Inorganic Compounds through Structure-Correlation Techniques," at eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Ill. He published a paper, "Metal-Ligand Bond Distances in First-Row Transition Metal Coordination Compounds: Coordination Number, Oxidation State and Specific Ligand effects," in Inorganic Chemistry. Former undergraduate students Rebecca Kruse and William Strub were co-authors. Dr. Dana Spence presided over a session titled "Advances in extractions, Separations, and Flow Techniques" and presented "Mixing in Microbore Tubing at Sub-microliter Flow Rates: Is Diffusion Becoming More Important?" at the 45th meeting of the Federation of Analytical Chemists' and Spectroscopists' Societies in Austin, Texas. Spence also presented a seminar, "Automated Micro and Nanoscale Determinations: How Well Do They Work?" to the department of chemistry at the University of Missouri at Columbia. James edwards, an undergraduate research student in Spence's group, presented "Investigations of Air-segmented Continuous Flow Analysis in Fused Silica Capillary Tubing."

From the School of Social Service: Dr. Cynthia A. Cook co-wrote a manuscript, "Access Barriers and the Use of Prenatal Care by Low-Income, Inner-City Women," that was accepted for publication in Social Work. Dr. William Brennan gave a talk on the relationship between degrading language and oppression to the Credo of the Catholic Laity in St. Louis. At the annual St. Louis Archdiocesan Pro-Life Convention Luncheon, Brennan received public recognition for outstanding contributions to advancing the cause of human life. Drs. Marla Berg-Weger and Susan Tebb co-wrote "Case Management with Family Caregivers of the elderly: A Strengths Approach," which in the Journal of Case Management. They also co-wrote, along with Dr. Doris Rubio (research methodology), Social Work Research, a book assessing the validity and reliability of well-being and stress in family caregivers. Berg-Weger and Tebb presented, with Dr. William Padberg, "Strengthening Student Generalist Knowledge: An Introduction to Teaching Social Work," at the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors in Albuquerque, N.M. Tebb also co-presented at this conference "evaluating the Use of Standpoint Theory to Develop Cultural Competence." Dr. John J. Stretch presented a paper and workshop titled "The Impact of Welfare Reform on Homelessness in Missouri" at the annual program meeting of the Missouri Association for Social Welfare in Springfield, Mo. Stretch also presented "empowerment: Disaster Responses Show the Way" to the annual program meeting of Catholic Charities U.S.A. in Houston. William Hutchison, SJ, was honored at the 25th anniversary dinner of Northside Community Center. Hutchison co-founded the center, located in the Ville neighborhood, and served as chairman of its board the first 13 years and has continued to serve on the board since. Under his direction, the center renovated 82 units of rental housing for low-income families. Hutchison also assisted in beginning the program for more than 800 senior citizens and 150 youths. Julie Birkenmaier wrote an article, "Use of Re-enactment for Theory/ Practice Integration," published in The Teaching Professor.

Miriam E. Joseph (Pius Library) presented "Student encounters with Tests and Measures" at the 1998 Mid-America Conference for Teachers of Psychology, held in evansville, Ind.

From the department of mathematics and computer science: Dr. T. Christine Stevens, a participant in the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics' Visiting Lecturer program, presented "The Ham Sandwich Theorem" and "Mathematical Inequalities, Social Inequalities and Science education" at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Stevens presented "Generation X Meets Variable x: Teaching College Math in the 1990s" to the St. Louis Area Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery. Dr. Anneke Bart presented "Some Results on Surface Groups in Surgered Manifolds" at the sectional meeting of the American Mathematical Society, held at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. Dr. Darrin Speegle presented "Applications of a Characterization of Wavelets via their Fourier Transforms" at the Wabash Analysis Conference at Indiana University and Purdue University.

From the department of modern and classical languages: Dr. Reinhard Andress organized a panel on "Protokolliteratur in der DDR: der dokumentierte Alltag" and presented the introductory paper, "Die DDR-Protokolliteratur: Kontext, Moeglichkeiten und Grenzen," for the German Studies Association annual meeting, held in Salt Lake City. Dr. Jean-Louis Pautrot published a review essay on Philippe le Guillou's novel Les Sept Norms du Peintre in the French Review. Pautrot also presented "Pascal Quignard, du Renouveau de L'essai Litteraire a L'invention d'un Genre" at the 40th annual convention of the Midwest Modern Language Association, held in St. Louis.

From the department of philosophy: Michael Barber, SJ, presented "Theory and Alterity: Dussel's Marx and Marion on Idolatry" on an invited panel devoted to the works of enrique Dussel. The panel was organized by the leadership of the Society for Phenomenology and existential Philosophy for the annual meeting in Denver. Dr. James Bohman participated in a panel on "Teaching the Philosophy of Social Science" at the meeting of the Philosophy of Science Association. Two of his papers also have been accepted for publication. "Citizenship and Forms of Publicity" will be published in Political Theory, and "Theories, Practices and Pluralism: A Pragmatic Interpretation of Critical Social Science" will be published in The Philosophy of the Social Sciences. Dr. Eleonore Stump gave the Stob Lectures at Calvin College in November. Her lectures were titled "Second-Person Account, and the Problem of evil" and "Faith and the Problem of Evil."

Dr. Gerard Magill (Center for Health Care ethics) presented the William T. Longust Annual Lecture at the Gateway Catholic ethics Network, a regional association of ethics committees in health care. The title of the lecture was "Stewardship of Resources."

Interim Provost Sandra Johnson presented the keynote address at the annual meeting of the American Pain Society in San Diego in November. The topic was "Law, ethics and Medicine: The Status of Pain Relief in the United States." She also co-wrote, with Thomas Greaney (law) and others, Medical Law -- United States of America, a volume of the International Encyclopaedia of Laws published by Kluwer Law International. She spoke on "Legal and ethical Issues in Treating Patients for Pain" at the annual conference of the American College of Legal Medicine in St. Louis. She co-presented a session on "Genetics: From the Lab to the Courtrooms" for the national meeting of the National Association of Women Judges in St. Louis.

From the department of geriatric medicine: Joseph H. Flaherty, M.D., has received the Pastoral Care Award at Saint Louis University Hospital from his co-workers. Considerations in awarding this honor were partnership and collaboration with staff; concern for wholeness in the healing and treatment of patients; embodiment of the mission and ministry of the hospital; and reverence and respect for people. David R. Thomas, M.D., recently was honored by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore at the school's 26th Annual Symposium in Geriatric Medicine. Thomas gave the edmund G. Beacham Memorial Lecture in Geriatric Medicine, speaking on "A Scientific Approach to Pressure Ulcers." Thomas also served on an expert consensus panel in Columbus, Ohio, convened to set continuous quality indicators for nursing homes in Missouri.

Drs. Philipp A. Stoeberl and Gerald E. Parker (management) co-wrote an article, "Relationship Between Organizational Change and Failure in the Wine Industry: An event History Analysis," for the Journal of Management Studies.

Dr. Seung H. Kim (international business) co-wrote the fourth edition of his book Global Corporate Finance, published by Blackwell Publishers.

Dr. Reuven R. Levary (decision sciences and management information systems) and doctoral student Peter Weigel co-wrote a paper, "Using Simulation to estimate the Uncertainty in Union electric Company's Residential Customer Forecast," for the International Journal of Global energy Issues. From the department of aerospace engineering: Dr. Sridhar Condoor presented "Creative Design Using Synergistically Compatible Morphological Matrix" at the Frontiers in engineering education Conference in Phoenix. Dr. Pat Benoy attended the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication engineers/American Society of Mechanical engineers Joint Tribology Conference, held in Toronto. A paper she co-wrote, "evaluation of Solid Lubrication Coatings for Advanced Air Bearings," was presented at the conference. Dr. Krishnaswamy Ravindra represented Parks College via the X-Prize team at Mojave Desert for the flight demonstration of Proteus. He also attended Inspections 98 at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston.
