Q: What do current employees need to do to apply for another job or promotion opportunity?
- A: According to University policy, you are required to be in your current position at least six months before you are eligible to apply for any other position outside your own department. You need to complete a promotion/transfer application for each position for which you want to be considered. The promotion/transfer application can be picked up at and submitted to either of the two human resources offices. Make sure you enter the vacancy number and title of the position on the application so it can be forwarded to the appropriate recruiter for review. We recommend that you attach a resume, current performance evaluations and any letters of recommendation. You can submit the promotion/transfer via fax, interoffice mail, regular mail or by dropping it off at the appropriate HR office. If you have any questions, contact the assigned recruiter.
- Q: How often should I review my benefits?
- A: There are very important notification dates that require action on the part of a participant. Benefit plans are open for enrollment for 31 days following the date that an individual first becomes eligible. It is therefore important to immediately take action or review benefit arrangements when you marry or have a child. Family changes that cause a loss of coverage -- such as death, divorce or a dependent child reaching the limiting age for eligibility -- are other very important times. Notification is required to change payroll deductions for coverage that no longer is in effect, and insurance companies will not make refunds of overpayments beyond a relatively short period of time. If you have a son or daughter who is no longer in school and is reaching the age of 19 or getting married, he or she will no longer be covered as a dependent as of the date of those events. The same is true of an unmarried dependent who is a full-time student reaching the limiting age for dependents (typically age 25 under University plans). Regardless of family changes, it is a good idea to review your coverage frequently. The time of medical plan open enrollment in the spring is a good time to think about your coverage. Your payroll check indicates the medical plan you have selected, whether you have single, two-person or family coverage, how much you are putting into retirement and the amount of life insurance you are purchasing over and above the life insurance benefit provided by the University. You also can call or visit the university benefits office to review your benefit arrangements.
