Nearly 400 members of the media from CNN, ABC and CBS called Busch Memorial Center home during the papal visit last month. Reporting live from a location in front of the College Church, these media drew upon the expertise of various University faculty.


Dr. Ronald Modras (theological studies) was interviewed by the following media outlets for stories about the papal visit to St. Louis: CNN, Reuters Television, CBS News, NBC Nightly News, ABC News, MSNBC and PBS. Modras also was interviewed by several national affiliates, the Associated Press and local media outlets.

Dr. Patrick Welch (economics) was interviewed live on CNN about the impact of the papal visit on St. Louis businesses.

James Kimmey, M.D. (executive vice president) was interviewed live by CNN for a story about the University's involvement in papal visit preparation. Kimmey also was interviewed by ABC News for a story about the networks using SLU as a base for papal coverage.

Dr. Greg Beabout (philosophy) was interviewed by Knight Ridder for a story about the papal visit and the conference "A Celebration of the Thought of John Paul II."

University President Lawrence Biondi, SJ was interviewed by WNBC-TV, the NBC affiliate in Chicago, for a story about St. Louis' Catholic roots.

John Kavanaugh, SJ (philosophy) was interviewed by ABC News for a story about the papal visit.

J.J. Mueller, SJ (theological studies) was interviewed by ABC News for a story about the pope's message to young people.

John Padberg, SJ (Institute of Jesuit Sources) was interviewed by CBS News and interviewed live by an ABC affiliate for stories concerning the papal visit and its meaning to Catholics.

Kenneth Steinhauser, SJ (theological studies) was interviewed by CNN for a story about Catholic Church history and the papal visit.

Saint Louis University students were interviewed by several television affiliates, CNN and USA Today for stories about the papal visit and the youth rally.

William Faherty, SJ (history, emeritus) was interviewed by the New York Times and the Associated Press for stories about the history of the Catholic Church in St. Louis.

Dr. Seung Kim (international business) was interviewed by Nation's Business for a story about the small business outlook for 1999.

Dr. Jim Fisher (marketing) was interviewed by Scripps Howard for a story about customer satisfaction following automobile purchases.

Robin Eastwood, M.D. (psychiatry) was interviewed Jan. 27 by the Philadelphia Daily News. Eastwood discussed the results of his recent study on the relationship between dementia and education in a sample of Jesuit priests. The study concluded that education and imagination act as protective factors against the onset of dementia.

Dr. Gerard Magill (health care ethics) appeared in a feature article on the front page of the Feb. 4 Wall Street Journal. Magill was interviewed about the ethics of hospital mergers in upstate New York. He discussed the center's new initiative in organizational ethics in health care.

Dee Anna Glaser, M.D. (dermatology) was interviewed by Prevention Magazine for a story on how to take care of your skin during the harsh winter months.

Donald Kennedy, M.D. (infectious diseases) was interviewed by the Philadelphia Daily News. Kennedy discussed the communicable health risks posed at religious services.

Sandra H. Johnson (interim provost) spoke at the National Press Club at a press conference on the Mayday Scholars Program, which she directs. She presented research results on legal and payment issues in treatments for pain. C-Span broadcast the press conference. As a follow-up she was interviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle and the American Medical News concerning pain management.

Kenneth Smith Jr., M.D. (neurosurgery) was interviewed by ESPN, ABC News, Flash/Boxing Update, Ring Magazine, the Associated Press, UPI, ABC Radio, Fox Sports Midwest and local media outlets regarding a head injury suffered by Fernando Ibarra during a boxing match in St. Louis earlier this month. Smith discussed his opposition to professional boxing and spoke about the American Medical Association's ban on the sport. Joseph Sherrill, M.D. (neurosurgery), Ibarra's attending physician, also conducted media interviews regarding Ibarra's condition.

Dr. Jean-Robert Leguey Feilleux (political science) discussed in French the impeachment process with the diplomat who was U.S. ambassador in Paris between 1980 and 1984. The interview ran on the French Canadian television network in Montreal. He spoke with a Paris radio station on Jan. 25 regarding the papal visit to St. Louis. The following day he addressed the same topic, in French, with Radio-Vatican in Rome.
