Continental Project Gets
Loan from SLU

As part of its ongoing commitment to Midtown revitalization, Saint Louis University will provide a $1.5 million loan toward the renovation of the Continental Building.

The University's loan is an important component of a round of financing that will enable developer Stephen Trampe of Owen Development to move forward with the project to renovate the Continental, 3615 Olive St., as an upscale apartment building.

"Saint Louis University's commitment to the Continental Building has provided real impetus to the project," Trampe said. "Potential sources of funding are encouraged that the leading institution in the Midtown area is putting its money where its mouth is by providing funds for the Continental Building project."

"We are always interested in furthering Grand Center redevelopment, and the Continental project is a key element of this," said University President Lawrence Biondi, SJ. "This partnership with our Midtown neighbors will help ensure success for the area's future."

Saint Louis University has been a major supporter of Midtown and the Grand Center District. SLU is committed to the continuing revitalization of the area. The University continues to make significant investments in Midtown, including plans for $60 million in infrastructure improvements related to the Project SLU 2000 initiative.

Biondi said Grand Center redevelopment should include a broad range of development in the district beyond arts and culture, including housing, businesses, restaurants and retail establishments. The Continental renovation is a step toward this, he said.
