Human Resources FYI

Q: I need to go on maternity leave. How much time off can I take? Will I be paid during my leave?

A: In accordance with the Family and Medical Leave Act, Saint Louis University allows an expectant mother 12 weeks of job-protected leave for maternity, provided she has not taken any other FMLA leave during that 12-month period. The employee can use accrued sick leave for the first six weeks of the leave. After the six weeks of sick leave have been used (or after the sick leave accrual is exhausted for an employee with less than six weeks available to her), she must exhaust her vacation balance. Once the vacation balance has been exhausted, the remainder of the leave will be unpaid. In certain circumstances, the employee may be allowed to use more than six weeks of sick leave, if continued leave is medically necessary.

Q: What types of training courses are available for departmental in-services?

A: Many topics in the training brochures can be tailored for private departmental in-services. In-services provide departments with the opportunity to train all staff members in one or two private sessions, where members can explore issues that relate to their area and arrive at solutions that are geared toward the specific experiences of the department. In addition, the sessions may be scheduled during staff meetings or other flexible times when the staff members are best able to attend. Programs on team building, telephone skills, conflict resolution and customer service are popular for in-services. To obtain information about these opportunities, call the training and human resources planning office at 977-2266.
