Heartland III Participants Will Be
'Choosing to Make a Difference'
|
Faculty and staff from the 11 Jesuit colleges and universities in the Midwest and South will gather May 22 to 25 of next year at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., to consider how they are "Choosing to Make a Difference." Heartland III, like the Heartland conferences held in 1994 and 1997, will provide a forum for faculty and staff conversation on issues of interest to those involved in the ever-changing milieu of Catholic, Jesuit higher education.
The program is sponsored by the presidents of 11 Jesuit universities, the rectors of their Jesuit communities, and by the Chicago, Detroit, Missouri, New Orleans and Wisconsin provinces of the Society of Jesus. The Heartland 2000 conference is titled "Choosing to Make a Difference." Participants will reflect on how they are part of the mission of Jesuit higher education, will celebrate the common mission they share and will consider how they personally can make a difference in the cultures of their home campuses.
"The Heartland conferences of 1994 and 1997 have provided our faculty and staff with an experience of the common spirit and mission among our sister colleges and universities, and a network of colleagues who share this spirit," said Jim Blumeyer, SJ, vice provost for mission and ministry. "There is great strength and support in our common links, and this is something we hope to build upon during the conference next spring."
More than 450 faculty, staff and administrators from the 11 Jesuit schools, as well as Jesuits from the sponsoring provinces, are expected to attend. All full-time faculty and staff are invited to apply to be among SLU's 50 representatives. Because of the participatory nature of the program, those selected as SLU representatives are expected to attend the conference from its opening on Monday evening until it closes on Thursday at noon.
