 
English Professor Delivers

Dr. Thomas Shippey, the Walter J. Ong, SJ, professor of humanities, will present the Arts and Sciences Endowed Chairs Lecture at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, in the Knights Room of Pius XII Memorial Library. The lecture on "The Origins of English" is free and open to the public. This presentation is co-sponsored by the Saint Louis University chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the academic honor society, and Sigma Xi, the scientific research society.
The lecture will consider the different linguistic strands that have contributed to the make-up of modern English and will attempt to show why this is not purely an academic issue.
Shippey has published widely in the fields of old and middle English and also contributed to the early sections of the PBS TV series The History of English.
