WOMEN'S COMMISSION: The Women's Commission is sponsoring a lecture on "'Beauty is Only Skin Deep': Caring for Skin and Melanomas." FACULTY/STAFF WEEKEND: Campus ministry is sponsoring "Spirituality in the Marketplace: How and Where to Care for the Soul," a two-night retreat directed by Carla Mae Streeter, OP, associate professor of systematic theology at Aquinas Institute of Theology. Streeter will invite retreatants to explore their spirituality and examine a familiar part of life -- where one might least expect to find the holy. The retreat begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, and ends at noon Sunday, Oct. 31. It will be held at Mercy Center in west St. Louis County. For more information, call campus ministry at 977-2428.
BROWN BAG LUNCH: The department of campus recreation is sponsoring monthly "Brown Bag Lunch Discussions." The discussions are presented by registered dietitians and students from the department of dietetics and nutrition. Each month a different topic on wellness and nutrition will be discussed once at the Frost campus in the Simon Recreation Center and once at the Health Sciences Center in the School of Nursing building. SOUP'S ON: The recent influx of refugees to St. Louis will be the focus of the Thursday, Nov. 4, Soup with Substance. "Welcome the Stranger: Refugees in St. Louis" will be presented by Patrick McCarthy and Ron Klutho, volunteers with area refugee resettlement projects. McCarthy also is a librarian at Pius XII Memorial Library. The speakers will consider how St. Louis has become the city that is second in the nation in the concentration of refugees, who these refugees are, why they have come, and what their presence means to people of faith. Soup is served at noon in the Argentum Room of Busch Memorial Center. All faculty, staff and students are welcome. The program is sponsored by campus ministry. ALL SOULS: On Tuesday, Nov. 2, the University will mark the Feast of All Souls at a noon Mass in St. Francis Xavier College Church. On this day, the Church celebrates and remembers all those holy men and women who have died but do not have specific feast days. Members of the University community are invited to write the names of the dead on "remembrance cards" that will be placed in a bowl and brought forward during the Preparation of the Table. Remembrance cards will be mailed to all employees and also will be available in the Loyola Center for Campus Ministry in Busch Memorial Center, from any campus minister or in College Church before the Mass.
BOOK SALE: Good books and a great cause are featured at the fifth annual book sale to benefit the University's Helping Our Own program. The sale is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 25 and 26, in the Loyola Center for Campus Ministry, Busch Memorial Center. A variety of new hardcover books, including children's, cooking and general interest titles, will sell for 30 to 70 percent off the suggested retail price. A portion of the sale's proceeds will benefit the University's Helping Our Own program, which assists employees facing financial emergencies. For more information, call 977-2428.
A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY: The second production of the University Theatre season is A Month in the Country by Ivan Turgenev. This is the story of a woman named Natalya who competes with her young ward for the affections of the vibrant tutor of her son. A Month in the Country will be performed at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 12 and 13 and 19 and 20; and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14. Season tickets still are available. DREAM STATES: The MacLennan Gallery of Asian Art is featuring an exhibition of scroll art by Sherry Bradshaw. In "Dream States," Bradshaw incorporates scroll forms into her work to communicate timeless stories and myths that portray both ancient philosophies and current events, thus crossing the boundaries between Eastern and Western cultures. SHARED VISION: Shared Vision, the three-part video-and-discussion series that explores the history of the Jesuits, the spirit and insights of their founder Ignatius of Loyola, and the guiding vision that animates Jesuit education, will be presented throughout the remainder of this semester. The first segment, The Beginnings, will be presented from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct 13, in LRC 111. The story continues in part two, Shared Vision: Transformation, which looks at how the Ignatian vision was transformed by the new cultures it encountered as it spread around the globe. It will be presented from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, in Jesuit Hall and Wednesday, Oct. 20, in LRC 113. The third and final segment, Shared Vision: Transitions, looks at the transitions the Ignatian vision encountered as it became part of the modern era. It will be presented from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11, in Jesuit Hall and Thursday, Oct. 7, and Tuesday, Nov. 2, in LRC 112 and LRC 111, respectively. MINIATURE WORLD: From Oct. 16 to Dec. 31, the McNamee Gallery of Samuel Cupples House will present "Great Moments in Architecture," an exhibit of souvenir buildings from the collection of Ace Architects.
