University Condolences

Dr. Daniel D. McGarry, professor emeritus of history, died Sunday, Oct. 24, at his home in Laguna Beach, Calif. He was 92.

Dr. McGarry, formerly of Glendale, was a prolific writer and authority on Western civilization and medieval history. He joined the faculty of Saint Louis University in 1951 and retired in 1976. Earlier, he had taught at Indiana University in Bloomington. A national leader in the parental school choice movement, he was founder and chairman of the Educational Freedom Foundation and a trustee and research director of Citizens for Educational Freedom, which has its headquarters in St. Louis. He also was editor of Educational Freedom, a scholarly journal.

Born in Los Angeles, Dr. McGarry earned a master's degree and a doctorate from the University of California at Los Angeles. He also studied at the University of Louvain in Belgium. He served as an air combat intelligence officer in the Marine Corps during World War II, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel. He returned to California several years ago.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Nov. 20 in the lower level of the College Church. A reception will follow in the Pre Marquette Gallery. All former colleagues and friends in St. Louis are invited to attend.

Dr. Natalie A. Connors, professor of anatomy and neurobiology, died Oct. 4 at Belleville (Ill.) Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was 71 and had been with the University for 43 years.

Dr. Connors taught microscopic anatomy for 31 years to medical and graduate students. Since 1986 she taught the basic human anatomy course to nursing, allied health profession and other undergraduate students. She was highly acclaimed for her teaching and received numerous awards, including the Golden Apple for the outstanding pre-clinical teacher from the medical class of 1973 and a certificate of appreciation for teaching dedication and academic excellence from the medical class of 1991.

"Natalie Connors served the University with distinction," said Dr. Paul Young, chairman of the department of anatomy and neurobiology. " She was a gifted teacher who took a personal interest in her students and always was willing to assist them in any way she could. Natalie Connors and her teaching will be deeply missed."

Born in St. Louis, Dr. Connors was reared in East St. Louis, Ill. She earned a bachelor of science degree from Saint Louis University, a master's degree from the University of Illinois and a doctorate from Saint Louis University. Her employment at Saint Louis University began in 1956 as a research technician in the department of anatomy.

A funeral Mass took place Oct. 6 at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Belleville.

  • Patricia Byrne, administrative assistant III in the office of the provost, on the death of her husband, Mr. Roger Byrne, on Sept. 23.

  • Ms. Mary Kolb, administrative assistant I in the School of Nursing, on the death of her mother, Ms. Lucille Muskopf, on Sept. 22.

  • Alex Moncada, patient assistant transporter at UMG Building, on the death of his mother, Mrs. Josefina J. Moncada, on Sept. 4.
