Spirituality in Teaching Examined

Spirituality in teaching generally has been overlooked in the literature on college teaching.

That's why Saint Louis University is presenting a one-day conference Nov. 12 to create awareness of the ways in which religious faith affects teaching. The conference will examine the spiritual aspects of the teaching life, and participants will engage in dialogue on the extent to which spirituality is and should be a part of teaching. Featured speakers will be:

  • John Kavanaugh, SJ, professor of philosophy at Saint Louis University.

  • Wilbert J. McKeachie, professor of psychology at the University of Michigan and author of Teaching Tips, the most widely used book of advice for college teachers.

  • Patricia F. Walter, OP, visiting professor at Aquinas Institute of Theology, who will offer reflections on the conference.

The program will include a discussion about "the excellence of desire," two views of spirituality in teaching presented by Dr. Belden Lane (theological studies) and Dr. James Korn (psychology), and a panel discussion by faculty from Saint Louis University professional schools.

The conference will be in the Saint Louis Room of Busch Memorial Center and is open to members of all academic communities. It is sponsored by the Center for Teaching Excellence, with support from the Marchetti Jesuit Endowment Fund. For additional information, call the teaching center staff at 977-3944.
