'Food Drivers' Wanted to Raise Funds
|
During the month of November, hundreds of students, representing more than 30 student organizations, will skip meals, participate in a 24-hour fast, sleep in cardboard boxes in the quad, solicit canned goods in neighborhoods, sponsor dances, sell T-shirts, run races, show their skills at a bowl-a-thon, attend talks and make significant personal and financial contributions. It's all part of the annual November food drive, sponsored by Campus Ministry.
Last year's food drive was the most successful ever, raising more than $23,000 for numerous local shelters, soup kitchens, food pantries and inner-city parishes, and helping the homeless and mentally handicapped, AIDS survivors and mothers and babies addicted to crack cocaine. More than one-third of the monies collected are distributed locally. The balance is distributed nationally and internationally. Last year, funds supported programs for runaway children, refugees in Kosovo, victims of war in Rwanda and Burundi, and countless others.
New this year is the Parks College of Engineering and Aviation chili cook-off, held outside of McDonnell Douglas Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15. The annual parking lot collections will be held the mornings of Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 16 and 17, in all parking garages and on all lots.
"We faculty, staff and administrators have a pivotal role in the food drive," said Michael Doody, SJ, food drive coordinator and director of campus ministry. "If you contribute just a few dollars and take a few minutes to stress the importance of the food drive in your classes and offices, the students will see how seriously you take our responsibility to alleviate the suffering of the hungry and homeless in our world."
This year's theme is "Fahrvromhhnger," based on the Volkswagen advertisement. T-shirts will be sold for $10 and can be ordered through campus ministry. Members of the University community also can contribute by sending a check, made payable to "Saint Louis University--Food Drive," to the Loyola Center for Campus Ministry, Busch Memorial Center, Room 207.
