Number of Presidential Scholars Will Triple

Saint Louis University used to honor 10 incoming freshmen with full-ride Presidential Scholarships.

That's about to change.

Thanks to Project SLU 2000, next fall the number of Presidential Scholarships will triple to 30, said Dr. Ned Harris, associate provost.

The scholarships provide for tuition, fees, room, board and $250 per semester for books.

In addition, a new and improved Presidential Scholars program features a new faculty mentoring component.

"The Saint Louis University Presidential Scholars program is designed to attract highly talented students of achievement and to ensure that these students experience, and contribute to, the full range of intellectual, social and spiritual opportunities that are the trademarks of a Saint Louis University education," Harris said.

Harris said that approximately 120 high school students will be asked to interview for the 30 positions during a Scholarship Weekend each February.

The Presidential Scholars program also will be further developed to engage each scholar in at least one extra-classroom, investigative and reflective learning experience that might focus on research, an internship, service or study abroad.

"This learning experience will be developed between the scholar and a faculty mentor and should require the scholar to investigate and reflect on constructs or experiences that can extend knowledge in a discipline or contribute to a scholar's preparation for life and/or career," Harris said.

The faculty mentor's role will include providing encouragement, referrals, guidance and assessment during the student's investigative and reflective learning experience.

Students typically will choose their faculty mentor by the end of their sophomore year. "They'll then have their junior and senior years to develop and complete their in-depth project," Harris said.
