DARE TO LEAD: In September, Dr. Ned Harris, associate provost for enrollment and academic services, received the Gateway Leadership Network's 1999 Dare to Lead Award. He was recognized for his positive impact on the lives of many young people. He serves as a youth soccer coach, the Midwest Region II coordinator of the National Catholic College Admission Association, a college night presenter and is chairman of the Conference of Jesuit Enrollment Managers. He is a member of the American Association of Higher Education, the National Association of College Admissions Counselors, the National Catholic College Admissions Associations and the College Board. In addition, he has written many publications on financial aid and college admission.

ENDING OR BEGINNING?: "A New Millennium: Ending or Beginning?" will be explored at the Thursday, Dec. 2 Soup with Substance, sponsored by campus ministry. Regina Siegfried, ASC, adjunct professor of theological studies, will provide a look at the history of religious millennialism in the United States and how mainline Christians are approaching the dawn of the third millennium. Soup is served at noon in the Argentum Room of Busch Memorial Center. All members of the University community are welcome. For more information, call 977-2428.

HEARTLAND REGISTRATION: Registration is under way for the Heartland III conference, scheduled for May 22 to 25 at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. Nearly 450 representatives from 11 Jesuit colleges and universities in the Midwest and South will gather to reflect on how they are part of the mission of Jesuit higher education, celebrate the common mission they share and consider how they personally can make a difference in the cultures of their home campuses. Titled "Choosing to Make a Difference," the conference will feature keynote presentations, small group discussion and liturgical celebrations. BROWN BAG LUNCH: The department of campus recreation is sponsoring monthly "Brown Bag Lunch Discussions." The discussions are presented by registered dietitians and students from the department of dietetics and nutrition. Each month a different topic on wellness and nutrition will be discussed once at the Frost campus in the Simon Recreation Center and once at the Health Sciences Center in the School of Nursing building. The next discussions are Nov. 19 (HSC) and Dec. 3 (Frost), both from noon to 1 p.m. For reservations call 977-3972.

GRE REVIEW COURSE: The Student Educational Services Center is offering a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) preparatory course that uses Cambridge Review materials. The course is offered on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Nov. 13, Nov. 20, Dec. 4 and Dec. 11 in Ritter Hall, Room 102. Cost of the program is $400, which includes written materials and 28 hours of instruction, or $416 for the CD-ROM version. Instructors for the course are Dr. Ralph Olliges (math), Dr. Peggy Bowers (logic) and Victoria Carlson-Casaregola (verbal). Class size is limited. WOMEN'S COMMISSION: The Women's Commission is sponsoring a lecture on "Decorative Arts" where participants will learn some basic do-it-yourself techniques and begin a take-home project. Vicki Riek, director of diversity and affirmative action, will make the presentation from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, in the Argentum Room of Busch Memorial Center. MINIATURE WORLD: Now through Dec. 31, the McNamee Gallery of Samuel Cupples House is presenting "Great Moments in Architecture," an exhibit of souvenir buildings from the collection of Ace Architects. The hours of the exhibit are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Admission to "Great Moments in Architecture" is $2 alone or is included with the paid admission to Cupples House. CUPPLES EVENTS: Cupples House is sponsoring several events this fall. The Trio Con Brio will perform a concert of Beethoven and Dvor‡k at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21. General admission is $10 and is $5 for Cupples House Members. Christmas at Cupples House will feature an international cr¸che collection on display throughout December. The American Kanterei in concert will feature chants, carols, chorales and hymns for Advent at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 12. General admission is $12.50 and is $7.50 for students. WELCOME ABOARD: Richard D. Muma has been named chairman of the department of physician assistant education at the School of Allied Health Professions. Muma received his MPH from the University of Texas-Houston in 1993. Before coming to SLU, he was the assistant director of the department of physician assistant education at Wichita State University.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: The training and human resources planning office has announced its Professional Development Program schedule for November and December. WINNING SITE: A World Wide Web site sponsored by Dr. Jerome Katz, professor of management, has been chosen as one of the Top 200 Websites for Business by Illustra Research and the Digital Media Research Centre at the University of Sussex. The site will be featured in Internet guides that include a specially designed browser on CD-ROM that will accompany books about personal finance, marketing, e-commerce and small business. The site can be accessed at www.slu.edu/eweb.

PA AWARD: Saint Louis University physician assistant student William Steiner received the Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories award from the Physician Assistant Foundation. Nearly 450 students from around the United States submitted applications, a record number in the program's history. The foundation considered applications on the basis of financial need, academic record as a physician assistant student, extra-curricular activities and future goals.

COLLABORATION: Members of the Professional Development Collaborative met at Saint Louis University on Oct. 6. The group's goal is to engage in a long-range reform focusing on student achievement with an emphasis on strong support of teaching and learning at the individual school and district levels. The collaborative consists of eight universities and 18 partnership schools in the St. Louis metropolitan area, all focused on school renewal and teacher preparation. The professional development school partnership between Wyman Elementary School and Saint Louis University's department of educational studies is part of the collaborative.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Saint Louis University Hospital is in need of adult volunteers. Have you ever called a hospital to check on the condition of a friend or family member? Have you ever sat in a hospital waiting room wishing for information about a loved one? The hospital is looking for people interested in helping others in similar circumstances. METHENY TALK: In addition to receiving more than $1 million in funding from the National Institute of Nursing Research for her study detecting aspiration associated with tube feedings, Dr. Norma Metheny received one of the best scores ever in grant competition. Metheny will discuss her grant from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22, in Room 234/247 in the School of Nursing. Metheny also will discuss how to choose a suitable study population when developing a grant proposal.

ENDOWED CHAIRS: The next Endowed Chairs Lecture is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, in the Knights Room of Pius XII Memorial Library. Lewis Perry, John Francis Bannon, SJ, Chair in History and American Studies, will discuss "Civil Disobedience, American-Style."
