Human Resources FYI

Q: How can I find out the pay of a position in order to tell if the position would be a promotion for me?

A: To find out the pay grade of a position, you need to pull up the University's job postings on the human resource management World Wide Web site. At the University's home page, click on "Employment Opportunities" and then click on "Staff Openings List." This will allow you access to the job listings for the Frost and Health Sciences campuses. If you move the cursor to the far right of the screen, there is a column labeled "Gr" for pay grade. If you do not know your current pay grade or need more specific information regarding a position, call the assigned recruiter in human resources.

Q: Sometimes members of my staff sign up for a professional development class, but the class is scheduled for a busy time in the office. Do I have to let employees attend?

A. The professional development program provides courses to broaden the skills and knowledge of staff members and increase their job effectiveness. Supervisors and managers are encouraged to allow staff members to attend training classes that will enhance their skills and aid in their development. Most classes are considered work-related, and the staff member is paid at regular time for courses attended during the workday. The supervisor or manager, however, is responsible for deciding whether participation conflicts with other departmental business or if the course is job-related. During busy periods for the department, staff members may be asked to wait until a later date to attend professional development courses. Most courses are offered quarterly. Call the office of training and human resources planning at 977-3747 for information.

Human resources would like to hear from you. Please address your questions to Michael Memos in Fitzgerald Hall.
