Media Matters

Members of the media frequently call the University for experts on various topics. If your expertise can be used for a breaking news story, call your campus media representative. The following are a few recent national media hits. Space makes it impossible to print media mentions on the local level.

Alex S. Befeler, M.D. (gastroenterology and hepatology) was interviewed Nov. 9 by KHOW-AM of Denver. Befeler discussed immunization patterns in the United States, especially regarding vaccines for hepatitis A and B.

Bruce Bacon, M.D. (gastroenterology and hepatology) was interviewed Nov. 15 by Dateline NBC. Bacon discussed hepatitis C and the treatment of one of his patients, country music star Naomi Judd. The story aired Dec. 3.

Dr. James Hitchcock (history) was quoted in the New York Times concerning the appointment of a new archbishop of New York and in the Los Angeles Times concerning the American bishops' statement on Catholic universities. He also was interviewed by the Journal Sentinel in Milwaukee for a story about a nun who is seeking radical equality for women in the Catholic Church. Hitchcock believes the debate is only going to heat up in the future.

Dr. Jerry Katz (management) was interviewed by Entrepreneur magazine for a story about how and why small entrepreneurial firms should limit the amount of organizational change. The story should run in March's "Cutting Edge" column.

Chuck Ammon (earth and atmospheric sciences) was interviewed by the Chicago Tribune for a story about recent research predicting a major earthquake along the New Madrid Fault.

Nicolas Terry (law) was the featured expert during a CNN online chat about cybermedicine on Nov. 5. Terry corresponded with participants and answered questions about health care on the World Wide Web. The CNN Web site featured Terry's biography and photograph, along with links to the University's Web site.

Infoworld, a weekly publication in California, interviewed Fred Niederman (decision sciences and MIS). He discussed the challenges facing information technology managers. He said IT managers will be forced to deal with more alternative work styles in the future, including telecommuting. The interview appeared in the Oct. 11 edition.

Dr. Brian Mitchell (earth and atmospheric sciences) was interviewed by NBC News in late October regarding the occurrence of earthquakes in regions where many people do not expect them. He appeared on the NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw.
