Some Information on Y2K Concerns at Saint Louis University
|
The following memo was distributed to the University community Dec. 14 regarding the Y2K Emergency Contingency Plan. All employees are encouraged to read it.
TO: Saint Louis University Community
RE: Y2K Emergency Contingency Plan
The University will be closed from Dec. 24 through Jan. 3.
All academic buildings and residence halls will be closed with the
exception of Marchetti Towers, Laclede House and the Village Apartments.
This does not pertain to any University owned clinical buildings.
Special permission has been given to key essential personnel in several
departments on the Frost and Health Sciences campuses to be in the
buildings from December 31st through January 2nd for monitoring of any
potential Y2K problems. The Executive Vice President has approved this
list of essential key personnel. Only persons on this list will be
allowed in buildings while the University is closed. There are no
exceptions to this policy.
The University Departments of Public Safety, Facilities Services,
Information Technology Services, and Residence Life will monitor the
University Services starting on December 31st. Our main purpose is the
protection of life and property. Our first concern will be for the
safety of our students who are on campus during the Christmas break.
In the event of any power outages at the University, the students at
Marchetti Towers, Laclede House, and the Village Apartments will be
relocated to Fusz Hall. Fusz Hall has it own backup electric generator.
Residence Life will distribute details concerning any unforeseen need
for evacuation to the students of the above three residence halls later
this week. We encourage students read these guidelines for their safety.
The Emergency Y2K Response Team will monitor all services to ensure that
they remain uninterrupted. A command post for the exchange of
information will be located in Dubourg Hall room 9. Anyone needing any
assistance, services, or information concerning any Y2K problems should
call the DPS emergency number at 977-3000. Please note that if there are
unforeseen prolonged power outages, services, etc. that could affect the
start of classes on January 3rd, 2000, this information will be placed
on the 977-SNOW telephone number. Closings would also be given to the
local media. Students, Faculty, and staff should use these two means to
see if the University is closed.
The Emergency Y2K Response Team has requested the following:
(1) Avoid using any of the University elevators after 11 p.m. on
December 31st: In the event of a power outage, one could be trapped on
the elevator. Elevators in Marchetti Towers will be turned off at 11
p.m. by residence life.
(2) Disconnect all electrical appliances that could be damaged by power
surges or spikes.
(3) University trucks and vans should be filled with gas prior to
leaving for the holidays. In case of gas shortages University emergency
equipment could use the gas as backup.
(4) Follow previous ITS guidelines concerning computer usage.
(5) Empty all refrigerators of food in case of power failure.
(6) If you have been given permission to be in the buildings during this
time period as essential personnel, make sure that you wear your
University ID at all times.
(7) All University parking garages and parking lot gates will be put in
the up position at 11 P.M. on December 31st. in case of a power outage.
To deal with the potential for year 2000 issues arising here at the
University, these recommendations and contingency plan in the event of
any major power outages, loss of services, etc, was prepared. There is a
high probability that nothing will happen during this period.
