What to Do When Bad Weather Hits

In case of severe weather, students and employees can check the opening status of the University this winter by calling 977-SNOW (7669). This dedicated phone line will have the latest information on whether the University is open or closed. Please dial carefully, and be sure to dial the prefix 977.

Announcements also will be made on the following media outlets: KSDK-TV Channel 5, KMOV-TV Channel 4, KTVI-TV Channel 2 and KMOX-AM 1120.

"The University is concerned with the safety and health of its students and employees," said James Kimmey, M.D., executive vice president. "We realize that weather conditions occasionally create situations where travel becomes difficult and unsafe. Accordingly, the University has developed a policy governing its operations under adverse weather conditions."

An announcement of "snow schedule" means all classes and activities after 10 a.m. continue as scheduled.

"Cancellation of classes" refers to the situation in which scheduled classes are suspended but all other University activities are continued.

"Closure of the University" refers to the situation in which all University activities are suspended and all offices are closed; only emergency essential employees identified by their respective vice presidents need to report to work.

This policy extends to all campuses and operating divisions of the University with the exception of SLUCare, which has its own policy based on operational requirements concerning weather-related reductions in service.

Other facets of the snow policy include the following:

  • Individual departments and divisions do not have the authority to make decisions concerning closure, early release or delays in opening.

  • "Snow schedule" and "cancellation of classes" affect students only -- all employees and service contractors are expected to maintain a normal schedule.

  • Employees who are absent on days when the University is operating will be required to use annual leave for such days.
