TESTING NEWS: Responsi-bility for the national testing program has been moved from the Career Center to Student Educational Services Center, directed by Dr. Celerstine Johnson. Nicholas Leider is coordinating the program. Students and alumni with questions about the testing program may call Leider at 977-2963 or send e-mail to Leidernj@slu.edu. In addition, registration materials for all tests are now found at the SESC.

PREP COURSE: The Student Educational Services Center has planned its spring 2000 preparatory course in the Graduate Management Admissions Test. For a $400 fee registrants will receive 28 instructional hours from experienced instructors using the Cambridge Review printed materials. The course meets from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on seven Saturdays beginning Jan. 29. University faculty members Dr. Peggy Bowers, Victoria Carlson-Casaregola and Dr. Ralph Olliges will cover topics such as critical reading, writing and math. REC CAMPS: The Simon Recreation Center's R.E.C. summer camps for children ages 6 to 14 are scheduled for 10 one-week sessions beginning June 5 and ending the week of Aug. 7. The sessions begin each day at 8:30 a.m. and end at 5 p.m., and early and extended care is available. The cost is $85 per week per child, and early registration is encouraged. In addition, the Rec Center's swim camps for children ages 6 to 16 are scheduled for six one-week sessions beginning June 5 and ending the week of July 10. CAMPUS COMPACT: Saint Louis University student Kara Lubischer and nursing professor Mary Ann Lavin were nominated by University President Lawrence Biondi, SJ, for national service awards given from member institutions of Campus Compact, a service-learning consortium consisting of several hundred colleges and universities. Lubischer, a senior, has been actively involved with the Community Outreach Center and campus ministry service programs throughout her four years at SLU. An intern in campus ministry, she was nominated for her extensive service involvement in the Ville neighborhood of north St. Louis and her coordination of after-school and tutorial programs for the children of St. Matthew parish. Lavin, a professor at the School of Nursing since 1994, was nominated for her involvement in SLU's Health Outreach and Preventive Education (HOPE) program. The program connects staff and students from the nursing school in providing medical service and resources for residents of Washington County, one of the poorest counties in the state.

HISTORY LECTURE: Dr. Elisabeth Perry, the John Francis Bannon, SJ, Chair in History and American Studies, will discuss "Women and the History of the Progressive Era" at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, in the Knights Room of Pius XII Memorial Library. The presentation is part of the Arts and Sciences Endowed Chairs Lecture Series and is free and open to the public. It is co-sponsored by the Saint Louis University chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the academic honor society, and Sigma Xi, the scientific research society. For more information, call 977-3647.

DPS HONORS: The St. Louis Chapter of the American Society for Industrial Security honored Saint Louis University Public Safety Officer Keith Meyers at the society's Law Enforcement and Private Security Appreciation Day Luncheon in November. He was recognized for his "extraordinary service in the line of duty."

ON THE MOVE: The general counsel's office at the Health Sciences Center (sometimes known as Medical Legal Services) has relocated to the Caroline Building, 1st floor. The primary telephone and fax numbers for the office have remained the same -- 268-5767 (phone) and 268-5192 (fax).

ENTREPRENEUR AWARDS: The Missouri Collegiate Entrepreneur Awards are open for applications to all undergraduate students at Saint Louis University. In the spring, the first-place winner will receive $1,000, and the faculty nominator will receive $500. The Missouri winner will advance to the North American Collegiate Entrepreneur Awards competition, which features a top prize of $10,000. The awards are a program of the University's Jefferson Smurfit Center for Entrepreneurial Studies and are sponsored by Edward Jones and Northwestern Mutual Life. For information call 977-3850.

YWCA LEADER LUNCH: Saint Louis University has participated in the YWCA Leader Luncheon since 1983. This year SLU honored nine of its women faculty and staff members on Dec. 9 at America's Center. The annual event pays tribute to women who have contributed to the growth and enrichment of the community, as well as professional/career accomplishments in their workplace. Employees honored were: Dr. Elizabeth A. Baker, assistant professor of public health; Janice Barnes, financial aid specialist; Dr. Marla Berg-Weger, assistant professor of social service; Dr. Ellen Carnaghan, associate professor of political science; Dr. Joan K. Carter, associate dean of the School of Nursing; Dr. Margie K. Edel, director of the baccalaureate program in nursing; Catherine Kelleher, business manager for Pius XII Memorial Library; Ann Marie O'Brien, director, internal medicine/administration; Chris L. Ohlemeyer, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics. Vicki Riek, director of diversity and affirmative action, hosted the event.

AQUINAS LECTURE: The 18th Annual Aquinas Lecture took place Jan. 20. Elizabeth Johnson, CSJ, distinguished professor of theology at Fordham University, presented "Mary: Friend of God and Prophet Ð A Critical Reading of the Marian Tradition."

Solemn sung vespers, a prayer service for the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas, will be at 4:30 p.m. Both events are free and there is no need to register. For more information, contact the Aquinas Institute of Theology at 977-3882.
