Voice Care Clinic Opens in St. Louis
School of Medicine Offers Unique Service to Midwest

When he arrived at the School of Medicine nearly six years ago, Dr. John F. Eisenbeis had an idea for a unique clinic for voice disorders. As a laryngologist, or throat doctor, he sensed the demand for this specialty in the Midwest.
He established the Voice Care Clinic at Saint Louis University, the first of its kind in St. Louis. Eisenbeis, assistant professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, sees about half a dozen patients each day with voice complaints.
"We are dealing with so many types of voice problems," Eisenbeis said. "From the hoarseness of a housewife/mother to the very complex voice problems of a professional singer."
The clinic offers a comprehensive approach to voice care. In addition to the laryngologist, the staff includes a speech-language pathologist, pulmonologists (lung doctors), a neurologist for neurologic voice disorders, gastroenterologists (because a lot of voice problems are related to reflux, heartburn, indigestion and other GI tract problems) and psychologists.
"Many people may not realize this, but hoarseness can be related to certain life stresses," Eisenbeis said.
In addition, Eisenbeis has brought in some of the latest technology to help physicians determine voice problems. For example, a patient can speak into a computer system that provides specific data that doctors can use to analyze the voice and begin treatment. Video equipment using stroboscopic light is used to analyze the precise movements of the vocal cords.
The Voice Care Clinic is located in the University Medical Group building, 3660 Vista Ave. at Grand Boulevard, Suite 312.
