Employee Recognition Program Revamped

A new-and-improved "SLU Stars" employee recognition program will soon be in place.

University President Lawrence Biondi, SJ, and the President's Coordinating Council approved the program in late January.

"SLU Stars is an employee award program that recognizes commitment to Ignatian values and the mission of the University," said Kathy Hagedorn, vice president for human resources. "It lets us reward outstanding University employees who demonstrate professionalism and behavior consistent with our University mission."

Staff, administration and faculty may be nominated. (Faculty nominations must relate to service performed outside of the classroom.) Individuals or small groups also may be nominated, and awards will be made on a quarterly basis.

"The SLU Stars committee will interpret these criteria, keeping in mind that this program provides special recognition to people who model aspirational behaviors for the rest of us, and not just a job well done," Hagedorn said.

The program is open to all employees with a minimum length of employment of six months. Awardees must show commitment to the Ignatian ideals of magis (striving for excellence) and cura personalis (personal concern and respect for others).

Those recognized as SLU Stars will be given a SLU Stars Pin; breakfast with an administrator, immediate supervisor, guest of choice and two SLU Stars committee members; a day off with pay (date to be approved by supervisor); Billiken Bucks in the amount of $50, to be used on campus as determined by the awardee; two free tickets to one University event; a sweatshirt with SLU Stars logo; photos displayed on campus (to be taken at quarterly breakfast); recognition at the annual Feast of St. Louis celebration; and announcements in University publications and the World Wide Web site. Winners should demonstrate these guiding principles:

  • Commitment: Embodies University values.
  • Competence: Strives for and encourages excellence and intellectual development of colleagues.
  • Conscience: Shows honesty, integrity and morality in every situation.
  • Compassion: Respects confidentiality, demonstrates communication skills by listening and seeking first to understand students, co-workers, patients and families.
  • Community: Fosters and supports charitable work.

Hagedorn said a special committee will determine who is chosen as a SLU Star. Employees are encouraged to submit nominations, and nomination forms and other information will be coming soon from human resources.

The Staff Advisory Committee began the SLU Stars program in 1995.
