Media Matters

Members of the media frequently call the University for experts on various topics. If your expertise can be used for a breaking news story, call your campus media representative. The following are a few recent national media hits. Space makes it impossible to print media mentions on the local level.

Dr. Robert Belshe (internal medicine) was interviewed by WebMD live on March 22. He answered questions about the latest in flu vaccine research.

Nancy Phillips, M.D. (pathology) was featured in an article in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Phillips discussed the firing of a breast cancer survivor who had worked for onhealth.com.

David Thomas, M.D. (geriatric medicine) was interviewed Feb. 8 by WebMD. Thomas discussed nutrition and older adults.

Dr. Ross Brownson (community health) was interviewed Feb. 11 by the Philadelphia Inquirer. Brownson discussed what is needed to make communities healthier, such as more outdoor exercise and better nutrition.

Dr. Richard Kurz (public health) was interviewed Feb. 11 by the Associated Press and local media outlets. Kurz discussed the $1 million in federal funding approved for the new Center for Research and Education on Bio-Terrorism and Emerging Infections and the need for such research.

George Grossberg, M.D. (psychiatry/geriatric psychiatry) was interviewed Feb. 17 by Reader's Digest. Grossberg discussed the new drug Exelon and how it improves daily life for people with Alzheimer's disease. The article will run in the May edition. Grossberg was interviewed on the same subject by the Seattle Times News Service.

Dr. Roger Lewis (public health) was interviewed Feb. 25 by Health magazine. Lewis discussed his study of different carpets and their propensity for cat allergens. The article will appear in the mid-May issue of the magazine.

Dr. Gerard Magill (health care ethics) was interviewed Feb. 23 by one of Britain's leading national newspapers, The Guardian. Magill discussed abortion legislation in Britain.

Dr. Xiao Ming Xu (anatomy and neurobiology) was interviewed in February by Praxis Medicine. Xu discussed current issues in spinal cord research. The story can be found at http://praxis.md.

Research by Dr. Daniel Schlafly (history) on charges of anti-Semitism against St. Maximilan Kolbe was cited in the National Catholic Register.

Dr. Charles Ammon (earth and atmospheric sciences) was interviewed by the Chicago Tribune for a story about predicting a major earthquake.

Steve Thaman (law) was interviewed and quoted in an article in the Japan Times. He commented on the differences in criminal courts in various countries.

Christopher Long, M.D. (pathology/toxicology) was interviewed for the March issue of McCall's magazine. Long discussed a case in which a woman was diagnosed with arsenic poisoning.

Jerome Cohen, M.D. (cardiology) was interviewed Feb. 18 by the internationally syndicated radio program "The Medical Minute." Cohen discussed a recent study relating baldness in men to heart attacks, and a new butter product that claims to lower cholesterol.

Dr. Greg Evans (public health) was interviewed Feb. 16 for "The Medical Minute." Evans discussed the new Center for Research and Education on Bio-Terrorism and Emerging Infections at the School of Public Health. Evans also was interviewed Feb. 11 by the Associated Press on the same topic.

D. Douglas Miller, M.D. (cardiology) was interviewed Feb. 10 by MSNBC. Miller discussed heart disease in women.
