Noted Art Historian Gives Lecture

An award-winning historian and photographer of Russian architecture will share his images of Russia's unique religious heritage during two upcoming events.

William Craft Blumfield will speak on "Treasures in the Wilderness: Religious Architecture in the Russian North" at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, in the Argentum Room of Busch Memorial Center. A seminar, "The Relationship Between Religious Art and Architecture in Russia's Vologda Region," will begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, in the Humanities Building, Room 142.

Both presentations feature Blumfield's breathtaking photographs of Russian religious architecture taken during his extensive travels there. His photographs, which have been exhibited at museums around the world, are part of the National Gallery of Art collection in Washington, D.C. Blumfield, who has written extensively on Russian architecture, photography and literature, is a professor at Tulane University.

These events are sponsored by the Russian and East European Studies Program, the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and the departments of history, fine and performing arts and theological studies.

Both events are free and open to the public. For more information, call 977-2915 or e-mail daniel@slu.edu.
