From the department of history: Dr. Hal Parker organized a session, "Without the Counter-Reformation: Catholic Communities in Protestant Europe," at the American Catholic Historical Association meeting in January. The title of his paper was, "Contending First with Calvinists and then with Jesuits: Catholic Identity in Seventeenth-Century Holland." Dr. Jose Sanchez was an invited participant in a panel discussion titled "Was Pius XII Really Hitler's Pope?" sponsored by the Newman Center and the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce at the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Terri Weaver (psychology) co-presented "Domestic Violence: The Relationship to Child Abuse and Neglect" as part of Missouri's Juvenile Court Improvement Project.
Dr. Gregory A. Pass (Vatican Film Library, Pius XII Memorial Library) presented a paper in January at the annual meeting of the Biblio-graphical Society of America in New York City titled, "Electrifying Research in Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts." The text will appear in the December issue of the Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America.
Dr. Steven Vago (sociology) traveled to Charleston, S.C., in February to participate in an organizational meeting for an international conference on the Transformation of Legal Systems in the Former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. He also has completed the work for his 11th book, Managing Cultural Diversity, which will be available in early 2002.
Stephen G. Magoc (aerospace technology) recently had a paper, "Aircraft Maintenance and Avionics Technician Supply and Demand: Preparing to Meet Future Personnel Needs," published in the January 2000 issue of PAMA News, published by the Professional Aviation Maintenance Association.
Dr. Charles Marske (sociology and criminal justice) spoke at the Coro Midwestern Center's Community Leadership Program.
Dr. Paul Shore (educational studies and American studies) has been appointed a visiting scholar at the Jesuit Institute at Boston College
Dr. Valerie Karras (theological studies) presided over a session titled "Orthodox and Political Theology" at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion, held in Boston in November. She also is a member of the steering committee of the Eastern Orthodox Studies Group of the AAR. In January Karras was invited by feminist theologian Rosemary Ruether to speak on the topic of "What Western Christians Can Learn from the Eastern Christian Tradition" at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill,
From the School of Social Service: Dr. Cynthia Loveland Cook presented with Dr. Susan Tebb, Dr. Marla Berg-Weger, Barbara Flory and Meg Milstead a paper, "Research, Education Partnerships: An Innovative Teaching Model in Social Service Education," at the Council on Social Work Education National Conference, held in New York City. Julie Birkenmaier, Berg-Weger and D.M. Rubio (research methodology) published "Human Service Non-Profit Agencies: Studying the Impact of Policy Changes," in Journal Socionomia, a publication of the National Association of Social Work in Russia. Berg-Weger and Birkenmaier published The Practicum Companion for Social Work: Integrating Class and Field Work, published by Allyn & Bacon. Berg-Weger, Tebb and Rubio will publish a book chapter, "Caregiver Well-Being Scale," in the third edition of Program Evaluation. Birkenamier and Berg-Weger also will publish "Community Participation: Identifying Influences and a Plan," in Favorite Counseling and Therapy Homeworks: 51 Therapists Share Their Most Creative Strategies. Berg-Weger, Rubio and Tebb will publish "Living With and Caring for Older Family Members: Issues Related to Caregiver Well-Being" in the Journal of Gerontological Social Work. Berg-Weger, Rubio and Tebb will publish "Depression as a Mediator: Caregiver Well-Being and Strain in a Different Light" in Families in Society. Gary Behrman will present "Healing the Spirit with the Body," a talk on the role of spirituality in healing, at the sixth annual Day of Caring for Breast Cancer Awareness at the Chase Park Plaza.
In recognition of his five years of service as editor of the Plant Science Bulletin, The Botanical Society of America honored Dr. Joe Leverich (biology) with a special award during ceremonies at the XVI Interna-tional Botanical Congress last August. Upon the completion of his term as editor, Leverich was invited to serve on the Botanical Society's publications committee, which oversees the American Journal of Botany and PSB.
From the School of Law: John O'Brien published two supplements, one to Missouri Evidentiary Foundations, by Lexis; the other to the third edition of his Missouri Law of Evidence, published by Harrison Company. Barbara Gilchrist coordinated and presented "What You Don't Know About Medicaid" for the Elder Law Symposium: Alternatives to Litigation, held at the School of Law on March 10. Joel Goldstein is the winner of the Thompson Coburn Faculty Writing Award competition for two articles on Wilburn Boat published in the Journal of Maritime Law and Commerce. Second-place winner for the award is Pete Salsich for his article on welfare reform and affordable housing in the Michigan Law and Policy Review. Goldstein recently completed four short entries in the Historical Dictionary to the Gilded Age, regarding four constitutional decisions, to be published by M.E. Sharpe. Goldstein's article, "Federal Common Law in Admiralty: Ban Introduction to the Beginning of an Exchange," appeared in the Saint Louis University Law Journal. Leland Ware gave a presentation on racial profiling at the Feb. 3 continuing legal education (CLE) program sponsored by the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis and the Mound City Bar Association. Ware's book reviews of Thurgood Marshall: American Revolutionary, by Juan Williams; and Restructured Resistance: The Sibley Commission and the Politics of Desegregation in Georgia, by Jeff Roche, appeared in the Journal of American History. On Feb. 22 Ware served as the moderator of a panel for a CLE program sponsored by the Missouri Bar Association: "The Impact of Daubert on Expert Testimony in Civil Rights Litigation." Ware's biography, Thurgood Marshall: Freedom's Defender (for young readers), was published by Time-Life Books in November. Nic Terry was a presenter at a CLE seminar titled "Law Office 2010: Creating a 21st Century Law Practice," for the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis on Oct, 14. He also prepared an article for the Lahey Clinic Medical Ethics Newsletter for its upcoming issue titled "Legal Pitfalls of Cybermedicine." Steve Thaman spoke on "Official Privilege, State Security and the Defendant's Right to a Fair Trial in the USA" at an international symposium titled "National Security and International Criminal Justice" in Berlin. Thaman also presented "National State Security Exception Clausulas and the Judicial Power to Produce Evidence" at the symposium. Melissa Cole has been invited to be a chair and discussant on a panel regarding discrimination at the Law and Society Association's annual conference in May. Cole will participate in a symposium on discrimination in academia sponsored by UCLA's Women's Law Journal. The essay on which her presentation is based is titled "Struggling to Enjoy Ourselves or Enjoying the Struggle: One Perspective from the Newest Generation of Women Law Professors" and will be published in the journal's symposium issue. The second edition of Jon L. Breen's Novel Verdicts, published at the end of 1999, is dedicated to Mike Nevins and two other mystery-writing lawyers and includes Nevin's entry on Harry Stephen Keeler's The Lavender Gripsack. Nevins also has accepted an invitation to take part in a conference on literature and film to be held at the University of Arizona in May.
Richard Howard, D.O. (orthopedic surgery) addressed the regional gathering of osteopathic family practitioners in January in Kansas City, Mo. He presented a paper on compression neuropathy.
Dr. G. V. Rao (earth and atmospheric sciences) presented an invited talk on the simulation of radiation fog at an international workshop on air quality management, held in Brunei in November. His travel was partly sponsored by the University of Brunei Darussalam. Rao was also invited to edit a topical issue on air quality of Pure and Applied Geophysics based on the papers presented at the conference.
Dr. Thomas J. Farrell has written a book about the work of Walter J. Ong, SJ (University professor emeritus of humanities) titled, Walter Ong's Contribution to Cultural Studies: The Phenomenology of the Word and I-Thou Communication, published by Hampton Press.
Dr. Irene I. Riddle (nursing) will receive the 2000 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, where she completed her Ph.D. in nursing. Riddle has dedicated her career to promoting the well-being of children and their families through clinical practice, teaching and research.
At the Southeastern Conference on the Teaching of Psychology, James H. Korn (psychology) served on two panels, one on mentoring and the other on improving department quality.
Dr. Raul de la Fuente Marcos (pictured) and Carlos de la Fuente Marcos (science and mathematics, Madrid) have published a co-authored paper, "On the Dynamics of Dust Grains in a Hierarchi-cal Environment. I. Binary Case," in the journal Earth, Moon, and Planets.
Drs. Adrian Blow and Tina Timm (counseling and family therapy) presented "Internal Family Systems: An Introduction," at the American Counseling Association annual meeting in February.
