Honors History Prof

The Saint Louis University chapter of the oldest and most prestigious honor society in the nation, Phi Beta Kappa, has announced its 2000 Book Award winner. The organization selected Dr. Charles H. Parker, associate professor of history, for his book The Reformation of Community: Social Welfare and Calvinist Charity in Holland, 1572-1620.

This award recognizes the best book in the arts and sciences by a member of the SLU faculty published in the years 1998-2000.

Frederick G. McLeod, SJ, associate professor of theology, received a certificate of special recognition for his book The Image of God in the Antiochene Tradition.

The award emphasizes the broad goal of Phi Beta Kappa of promoting a liberal arts education. It is given to a work that meets the following criteria:

  • The book should adhere to the highest standards within its discipline.

  • It should have significance for society at large.

  • It should be accessible to a general reader in the academic community.

The book award ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in the Frost campus bookstore. A reception will be offered after a presentation by Parker. For more information, call Christine Harper at 977-3109 or send an e-mail to harperc@slu.edu.
